Gen 2.5 Bi-xenon retrofit

When I got my Monty a year and a half ago, one of the first "mods" I did was 6k drop in h4 hi-low hid. Due to the fact they were installed into the factory reflector housing designed for halogen, the light pattern was off, resulting in light spray/bleed. I had to aim them way down to avoid getting flashed, which reduced my useable light!

I finally got the courage and time to put in a bi-xenon retrofit today.

I used a drop-in, no-name bi-xenon 2.5" projector set from amazon. It was about $50 for the pair with shrouds. They are designed to sandwich into your existing h4 hole, requiring no drilling or custom mounting or gluing. They use common d2s hid bulbs. The have a seperate wire for the high beam solenoid. I purchased some d2s 4300k bulbs which should be here later this week. I also got some more headlight sealant which hasn't come yet. Not a big deal since the truck is at the shop getting new head gaskets.

Here are a couple pics of the install.

That's all for now. Need to wait for the glue, bulbs, and my truck back to proceed.

I'm hoping to have a nice sharp cutoff and better lighting! I'll post an update later this week.

Here is a list of the items I purchased:

I already have genuine Philips ballasts from another car's project. The connector is already D2R/D2S factory type, so no need for adapters.

I dont expect exceptional light output quality on these, as maybe a LS430 retro would be, however for under a hundred bucks and no custom cutting/gluing/screwing, I hope this turns out ok. Ill have before/after shots later this week when everything gets installed. I did this retro in a set of junkyard headlamps just in case I screwed it all up.

I hope to include a night shot with one side factory reflector with H4 6000k drop in HID, and other side the retro with 4300k HID. Stay tuned!

Billy,

Thanks for the shopping lists. I fancy myself doing this mod after seeing these images.

These are similar mods to your

The most nerve wrecking part has to be cooking the headlights. Is it that simple?

I'm interested in the before and after, coming from a Jeep that had the plastic lenses I find the headlights on my 98 to be quite adequate. I may look at a set of Narva bulbs down the road though, they are a huge improvement from what I have read.

I have the Cibie h4 setup in the Miata using Narva bulbs and absolutely love them, excellent cutoff and no need for fog lights, they make an hid upgrade for the housings but no need to do it.

Raysobi,
I am really interested in the Raider images you posted earlier. Did that come from a different forum post? Cooking the headlights? What are you referring to?

Jay,

I sent you a link regarding the Raider.

To remove the lens cover from the base, you have to heat it up long enough for the sealants to melt before you can take them apart.

There are several ways of doing this, auto heat blower gun or stick it to an oven.

Whoa!!! Are these Evolution 8700 LED headlights really this expensive?

Got them installed. I'm very happy with the results. It is a smooth wide beam with a really sharp cut-off. The high beams are excellent.
