I got sick of the useless center console black hole so I removed it and replaced it with a generic one. It works remarkably well and has made a much more useful space vs. the original. I've been using this now for over 6 months and I don't regret it one bit. The way the original was molded made it super easy to cut off square using a dremel and mini saw wheel. I removed the console from the truck and cut it in the house then installed the new one. I had to tweak the aftermarket one a bit to allow the arm rests to function properly. Yes it still accumulates junk but at least now I can see the junk. The storage space can also now be used by passengers in the back (cell phones, snacks, etc) so it was overall a major improvement. 3hrs total project time but that would be far less if I did it again now that I have a plan. The only problem (which isn't a problem for me) is that I think if you try and flatten the front seats the arm rests hit my mod, but for normal driving positions there is no problem. And I think once you cut the original like I show in the photo, you could use any aftermarket console you want as long as it fits. I first thought about putting a cap on the opening I made but the one I bought just worked out well so I didn't. I only have one screw holding it in, and that is just to prevent it from sliding backwards when accelerating or climbing anything steep. Otherwise it is easily removable.
Lastly this might not be possible for some Monteros depending on electrical options (at least without thinking through relocating switches). I think there was 1 switch plug above the cup holder that is gone now, but whatever option that was I don't have it so it wasn't an issue for me. And the others in the photo are covered now (heated seats I think?) so you need to consider that. For my Monty this has been a welcome change.
