Gen 2.5: Front Differential/Axle Tube Leaking

Hello everyone! My gen 2.5 Montero has developed a weeping leak of gear oil at the front differential, on the right side, where the axle meets the flange with 4 bolts on it. It seems to be weeping out right between the two flanges, about a drop or two a week. It collects and droplets of gear oil form on the bottom of the larger, black flange - closest to the diff.

I have Mitsubishi ASA installed on my computer and I could find two seals that go on this part, but they are both saying they are "dust" seals. I ordered MB160948, the lower one in the diagram. Not sure if this is even the right one.

I could only find another thread on the ol' interwebs pertaining to this sort of leak, but was no help at all. I figured I would start a thread that way it can easily be found for other guys. Is this the seal that Mitsu has a "special tool" for pulling it out?

Is this even the source of the leak? Any help would be much appreciated!

Where those two flanges meet there isn't any gear oil between the inner stub flange and the outer axle flange, only axle grease that does have a dust cap on the outer/axle flange. There is the possibility you have a bad seal at the differential and gear oil is traveling down to the flange.

I still have this issue of weeping gear oil at this flange.

It must be a bad seal at the differential like you say. Do I need any special pullers or anything to get to that point in the diff? Never messed with any of that stuff before. Hoping to get this fixed so I can fill the diff up with some fresh gear oil and be ready for Summer!

Thanks for the help.

The factory service manual is not very informative on the removal of this axle tube!

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated fella's :)

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
It's pretty straight forward, disassemble the front axle assembly reseal and in the words of the great Haynes manual "reassemble it in the order you took it apart". There's not much to that job.

IIRC the seal is actually at the outside of the CAD housing. Like Toasty said its straight forward and shouldn't need to take the spindle apart on this side to get the CV shaft unattached from the jack shaft. Good 3 to 4 hours work thou.

The oil seal is the 32034 at the top is what you want. It is easy to press in. The 32033 dust seal on the bottom requires the bearing cut off and a new bearing pressed on.

N12 on this diagram most likely. I don't think its 32034 - this is just for keeping dust out. Shoot me your VIN and I'll grab the mits number from ASA
