Gen 2 ABS woes

Hi All,

I’m having issues with my ABS that my mechanic can’t figure out. Last fall, my ABS light started coming on intermittently on my 95 SR. Eventually in January, it came on and stayed on.

My mechanic checked all the speed sensors and they looked ok. Without having the proper Mitsubishi diagnostic equipment, after poking around, we thought it might be the ABS computer. A trip to the junkyard later, installed the new computer unit and no change.

I then took it to the dealer for a diagnosis. They hooked it up to their machine and came back with two codes: DTC-43 = faulty ABS Hydraulic Unit and DTC-32 = faulty G sensor.

So….another trip to the junkyard and then back to the mechanic. New G sensor installed. Before removing and replacing the old ABS Hydraulic Unit, we unplugged it and plugged in the new one. No dice. The mechanic then bench tested the new one and it worked on the bench. Wired the old one directly to the battery and it also worked. Plugged it back in and nothing.

So now we know the ABS Hydraulic Units work, have a new G Sensor, ABS computer and the ABS is still out. My mechanic starts testing for voltage in the ABS system. He finds that the ABS system relay is not showing consistent readings. We buy a new one, replace the relay and still nothing. Poking around, he sees that sometimes there is voltage and sometimes not, and mostly measures inconsistently within the the ABS system only. So the headline is, all parts of the ABS are functioning individually, but I have varying voltage readings within the system. I may not be saying all this correctly as I am not mechanically inclined, so I hope I’m not leaving anything out.

Anyway, my mechanic feels this is an electrical issue as opposed to what the diagnostics from the dealer is saying, but he doesn’t have the tools to be able to figure it out. I should say that everything else in the car is working great. No issues.

Anyone have any ideas about what’s going on here? Or know of a good mechanic in the Denver/Boulder area that knows Monteros well that can figure this out?

Thanks in advance for any help.
