Gen 2 - Fuel Gauge acting up...

What's the issue with these?

Apparently it's a common problem. Is there a common solution here?

Probably the fuel sender unit is out. I had to replace one on a mitsubishi mirage when it would fluctuate or tells me I'm half full when I just pumped.

Yep, mine hasn't worked since I got my truck. I hav a new unit to put in but I STILL need to replace the tank. Seems like I always have an empty tank and no time or a full tank and the day off.

How tough is the sender to get to and replace?

Pull up the carpet in the cargo area, you'll find an access panel that gets you closer to the top of the fuel tank. There is enough room to do the fuel pump through there so I would guess the sender can also be done the same way.

Replacing the pump and sending unit is easy peasy. Once you get the access panel off you need a ratchet and an extension, and I believe 8mm socket. Might need a small pry bar or flathead screwdriver to loosen up the gasket but other than that just make sure the new sending unit goes in facing the correct way.

If your Montero is from the Northeast, be prepared for completely rusted nuts and studs holding the sending unit in. The studs are part of the tank and if you break them off, you'll have to get creative (or get a new tank).

Heck, not even the Northeast. Mine has been in Iowa for 15 years and I've got no choice but to replace the tank. Nuts are rusted to the point where they just round off or take the studs with em. Good times.

I've seen guys on Montero sport forums use self tapping screws and rubber seals or JB Weld studs in from inside the tank. Seems like a common problem for lots of Mitsubishi models.
