I texted a seller locally about looking at a 2003+ Montero and he said the 2003+ 3.8 does not have a timing belt but has timing chain instead. Just wanted to verify that? Any deferred maintenance to look out for then?
3.8l has a belt - at least in my 2005. Paid dealer to replace it. (Preventive Maintenance) I'm pretty sure recommended the change interval is 60K miles. I replaced mine at about 96K miles. Pushed it a little far - but the key is to replace before it breaks. Maybe I should go to Vegas...
