Gen 3 fuel gauge weirdness?

So it seems like the fuel gauge in my montero is really sensitive to changes in pitch. The gauge can swing 1/4 a tank on a trip from my driveway to the freeway etc so its hard to tell what the fuel level actually is.


Is this common? How many miles per tank do you guys get usually?

Anywhere from 15-20 mpg. I average 17 mpg with my a/t tires. A full tank of 87 octane fuel lasts 410-440 miles of pure highway. 280-320 of mixed city and highway.

I know there's a recall on the fuel levelling valve in the tank but that's for leaks. The cluster is known to fail, but that's usually the temp gauge. Mine was replaced for under warranty at 60k miles. This could also be a wiring problem.

seems to read fine, just very sensitive. Driveway parked slightly uphill will show one thing, flat highway another, coming down from parking garage at work another etc

Yes, because the fuel level sending unit is in the front or rear of the tank, when the vehicle is going uphill or down the fuel shifts and makes the level sending unit change as well. It's all common sense.

Yes I understand fuel is liquid and the sensor moves up and down, its particular location seems to make it swing more wildly than any other vehicle I have owned it must be in the very front or back of the tank, or the tank itself (havent crawled under to look) is very flat which makes angular changes more extreme

FYI I figured it out, we were installing OME suspension components today and low and behold the fuel tank is indeed a long skinny one on the passenger side that runs from pretty much along side both doors, because it is so long and flat this explains the gauge reading
