Gen 3 montero 3.8 Timing Belt Parts checklist

I'm planning to do the timing belt on my gen 3 montero with the 3.8 motor and have been trying to gather all the information about what other parts should be replaced while the engine is partially taken apart. I figured having a thread with all this information in it would not only help me to organize the parts necessary but would save someone else the time of searching through various different threads etc.

I do not know everything at this point so hopefully others can chime in on what parts should be replaced and maybe certain parts aren't necessary to replace. For instance if a part doesn't have any history of failing I don't see why you would bother to replace it just because you can.

I also want to have a list of part numbers and best places to get the individual parts or kits.

I will keep this top post updated with any new information given lower down the thread so people won't have to search around as much.

List of things that should definitely be replaced at every timing belt interval (not finalized at this point)

I should also mention the owners manual recommends to replace the timing belt at 60K, it then says to replace it at 100K if not previously replaced. So what I take from that is it should last 100k, but many might not want to risk that since it is an interference engine. It also doesn't mention when most of the other items need to be replaced, such as the water pump or timing belt tensioner.

Yes, the water pump is necessary. Why? Because it's a consumable...that is, it's a part that is assumed to wear out and need replacement from time to time. Further, when it goes, you're stranded.

It's a cheap part but replacing it takes a lot of work, so it's smart to replace it with the timing belt.

To replace the water pump, you get to remove EVERYTHING you put on to replace the Timing Belt. So you go through the pain of doing the timing belt (removing fan, the accessory drive stuff, the aluminum shroud everything bolts to, finding out the previous owner used SAE bolts randomly in place of METRIC bolts... rethread with helicoil) during Christmas break, making sure to get the timing perfect only to have to pull it all apart again during Spring Break.

There are two ways to do things, right and again.

and by the way, when the water pump bearing seizes, it takes out your timing belt and the valve train. Its cheap insurance.

I did the Goodyear belt, Aisin pump and OEM tension. Was cheaper that way than the Aisin kit without the tensioner.

I would replace the timing belt tensioner. Mine just broke about 2 weeks ago and just about snapped my original timing belt with 133,000 miles on it. Had the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner replaced.

I bought the timing belt, water pump, crank bolt, tensioner and cam seals and had a local independent shop do the job. He also swapped out the switches on the top of the transfer case at the same time (I provided these, too). Total labor was less than $600.

I don't recall off the top of my head. I had a lot of other work done as well. The shop ended up ordering the parts since it was more or less an emergency situation, so I'm sure I paid quite a bit more for parts. I'm guessing around $1,000 parts and labor.
