Gen 3 or 3.5 rear doors.. lets see what you ave done

All, my Gen 3.5 rear door is, in a word, busted. Netting is stretched, plastic bits are missing, anchors long disappeared. I want to do something to clean it up and make it useful again. I have some cools hots of folks who added pelican boxes, first aid kits, other tools etc. to their doors. I would love to freshen mine up over the holiday. Looking mainly for storage, but open to suggestions. Anybody have any ideas, pictures, advice on doing the job?

Not sure about the gen III but a gen II could benefit from cutting it open and using the cavity for storage and using 1/4" plywood for doors. It's something I've been contemplating as have several other owners.

You followed me, so now we're both lost

I will be doing this with my 2001 XLS Montero over the holiday. The best thing to help with the storage and mounting that I have seen are the Quik Fist mounting brackets. I picked up a set from Amazon and will be installing some over the holiday. I can put pics up as I go along.

Quik Fist looks awesome! That's definitely going on the list.

I was thinking of at least one of these...

Maybe two if there is room. I carry a lot of bungees and ratcheting tie-downs. I think one of these boxes would be ideal for that. At $30 you can't go wrong. I have also been considering a Smittybilt molle system that is made for a Jeep tailgate. I just haven't seen one in person so I am not sure how I would mount it. I do like the idea of heavy duty Velcro mounts for bags and such. You could make a lot of different things fit int hat system. I just want to be sure I do not add an extra projectiles in the event of a crash.

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
It sounds like you are looking to refurbish your entire back door assembly.
Great idea. Perhaps fabricating a diamond plate panel that replaces the plastic.
Here is what I did when I tossed the factory screw driver holder.
I backed the plastic up with metal, and through bolted the quick fists in place.
The quick fist mounts have proved themselves over thousands of off-road miles.
I look forward to seeing your progress.

Those Quikfist are awesome. That definitely going on my list. Priced right for my build too :ylsmoke:

I don't think I am going to do any major fabrication. IU just want something to haul around all the tie-downs and bungees I keep in the back. There are some knock off Pelican cases that I think I will try tool. They are like $29 for a pretty large case. Thinking of strapping on one these to the door too.

Also, I have been thinking of the Smittybilt molle pack carrier for the Jeep tailgate. It's pretty cheap and looks like it could be mounted. I like the idea of velcroing things in place.
