Gen 3 Tire opinions looking at LT235/80R17

I currently have Falken Wild Peak LT265/70R17-121 on my gen 3 - great traction tires, but relatively hate them because of the noise generated on the Gen 3 chassis. Bought them new and have put about 35K miles on them over 29 months.

So - biggest issues for me are - we get snow and ice - this is Wisconsin after all its May and still darned cold, could freeze any day yet, matter of fact I think it did this past weekend, so good traction is a must. Other thing is road noise. Hated the Wild Peaks since day 1. As you can see from my signature I have semi aggressive tires on the other 3 trucks, these are by far the most annoying. They just howl on the highway.

Choices 0 in my order of preference:
1. BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO's - I have these on the '93, new last fall - maybe have put 3k miles on them (probably less) Good snow traction, quiet on this chassis - anybody have these on a Gen 3? A little concerned as there is a BFG note on the LT235/80R17 size that says "Not Rated For Severe Snow" - whats up with that? This note was not on the 33x10.5 on the SR. Strange.

2. Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S - saves about $160 across 4 - reviews say quiet, some other reviews say crappy snow traction - Anybody have real Gen 3 life experience?

3. COOPER DISCOVERER AT3 - about the same price point as the BFG - not much other data

4. Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs - good reviews, maybe noisy, similar price as BFG.

5. Pirelli Scorpion ATR - lowest cost, good reviews, $200 (or more) less than BFG

Please post up real life on the Gen 3

Thanks

Oh - the Falkens will be re-purposed on the '92 along with FJ nato steelies

There are many threads on this forum and others praising the Cooper AT3, I will never run anything else on my truck. We have decent winters in Utah and never once did I put it in 4wd this winter since buying the tires last summer. Even on fishing and hunting trails last year I never put it in 4wd except in a few spots.

I have AT3 on my 2nd gen and i love em. We don't get much snow here in Seattle but when we do it handles great.

AT3 - how is the noise factor? Anybody running these on a Gen 3? Much different chassis than a Gen 2.

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
I've run DuraTracs when they used to make the 3-ply side wall, and the tread pattern worked very well in a variety of conditions including: snow, ice, desert, and mild rocks.
Presently I have Cooper S/T Maxx and can say enough about how happy I am with these tires.
The road noise is less than the DuraTrac. I've had them for less than 6k miles, but they've been in snow, ice, and desert with excellent results. I'll be testing them on the Plumas County rocks this summer...

I'll probably table this discussion until fall. Today I did a Craigslist search for the FJ Steelies and came upon a set of 5 containing Bridgestone Dueler H/Ts 265/70R17. 4 at about 80% tread left and 1 brand new along with the FJ rear tire cover. Got these for the price I was expecting to pay for 4 wheels, so couldn't pass them up. For sure not my choice for winter tires, but will certainly make a nice summer swap onto the Gen 3.

As far as the FJ steel nato wheels - the center hole on these (2008) is 106mm, so will require a little clearancing to fit over the Gen 2 108mm rear axle stubs.

Anybody need a really nice FJ rear tire cover and 4 center caps?

plh, I don't have a Gen 3, but I have to say don't overlook the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10. I've been running them on a Gen 2.5 for the last year and nearly 25k miles and the tread is wearing exceptionally well. I've had them in snow, rain, sand, mud and rocky terrain and been very satisfied with their performance. Really a good tire for the money. Only 2 downsides in my mind are that they're made in China (if you care about that sort of thing), and the sidewalls are not as robust as say the S/T Maxx.

I first bought the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S for gen3 before I bought the OME lift. I loved them! They did great off road. Nothing serious but they did great. I still have them and plan on putting them on when I find a second set of wheels.

FJ steelies remounted with the Falken wild peaks and installed on the '92. Amazing how different tires preform on different chassis. Pretty darned quiet on the Gen 2.

Caliper and scribe, marked 1mm on each of the 6 offset tabs on the backside, then very carefully used my 4" (102mm) angle grinder and followed the scribe lines. Took about an hour to do all 5. Test fitted each on the rear. Take it slow and easy with good lighting.
