GEN1 Steering wheel removal

Hi All,
My turn signal switch is making a racket where it contacts and signals stopped working. I’d like to remove and clean or replace but cannot figure out how to remove wheel. FSM isn’t clear. The 2jaw puller I have won’t move it.

I tried to remove one at yard and it wouldn’t budge so I bought whole column.

Remove the top plastic piece trim piece on the steering column( just snaps off, no screws.) then turn the steering wheel a 1/4 turn from the center. There is a hole now visible in the back of the steering wheel.

You will need a T30 Torx socket to get the bolt out. It needs to be skinny to get in the hole but long enough to reach the bolt. After you get one out, turn the wheel 1/4 turn from the center the other way and remove the other bolt.

When you are done, the bolts will fall into the wheel, pick them up and tighten them into the back of the air bag and when you are ready to install, all you do is connect the wires and push the air bag in. I have one to change in the near future, let me know if you need a video, I can make one.

in a gen1?
we don't have air bags in gen 1
use a puller, if my memory has not failed me, it's pretty standard wheel removal.
I put a grant on my gen 1 3 years ago, and I'm sure it was a straight forward pull

I'm surprised its so tight. I took the bolt out of the center in my Gen 2 ('93 no bag) and expecting to need to grab a puller I thought what the heck, gave it a good jerk and it came right off. Pretty sure Gen 1 & 2 (and maybe even Gen 3) are the same steering shaft splines.

hmmmmmm..................................................

I got the wheel off, had to fab a mini puller to work with the M8 Holes in the steering wheel

It took quite a bit of force until it “popped”.

My turn signals stopped working which is why I am trying to swap the assembly over.

Does anyone know what usually goes bad on these?

What about grease for mechanism, white lithium?
