Generator and fuel storage during travel?

Hi everyone,

I now have a Honda eu2000I generator and am trying to determine the best possible storage solution for the generator while in transit. Is it safe to put the generator and a one gal fuel jug in a Rubbermaid Action Packer, and secure that in the rear of my SUV? I plan to use the carb drain valve to drain the generator of all fuel before travel and also plan to keep the 1 gal fuel jug empty until the final resupply before going to my camping destination. I don't have a rear deck option, as I plan to toe a small hardsided camper. Considering some form of tongue box for the trailer, but thats not currently in the budget.

Any other suggestions?

I have carried a small generator in the trunk of the subaru before, I don't see a problem with what you are proposing. If you leave it overnight crack a window.

I had similar questions a few months ago and the general consensus was that you don't want to have a cheap fuel can in the vehicle at all. Putting the generator in a plastic bin would be fine, but you want to make sure there is ventilation so even small amounts of gas fumes don't build up in the bin or the vehicle. As for the fuel, get a good NATO fuel can as they are definitely more robust, and keep the fumes in. The plastic ones you can get at the hardware store are a definite no. I pack my generator into the back of the Range, and carry the fuel outside, but from my experience the NATO cans would be fine in the car for a trip. I always leave the windows cracked when I stop though, and the generator is never in the vehicle overnight.

Excellent, thanks everyone!

I just ordered two of the 10L NATO cans from BIGGUY's link...

Thanks!

If it were me I'd go with the tongue box idea. You could just make a frame that would hold the generator inside its plastic box, and maybe make room for the fuel cans too. That is of course if you have a welder. If there's no room on the front you could do one on the back so you wouldn't have to cut up the frame.

why not ratchet strap the action packer with the generator and fuel to the tongue of the trailer?

We carry two Honda 2000i generators and I was thinking about getting one of the Aluminess Boxes that would keep the generators outside, locked and out of sight. Plus, you could keep fuel strapped to the top of the box

They make some awesome products and are an American company. Very good to deal with since they've made us some custom products before
