Gimike812's trailer build on sentiment and frugality

So I come to realize that even with one of the largest truck campers on the market my storage space is limited. Having no space to carry extra gear like the kids toys, mini bike, ice chest for food and drink longer than 5-6 days, BBQ smoker. Usually when we camp we get enlisted in cooking for the group so extra kitchen equipment.

So I looked for what I had available on limited funds and this is an old trailer built by my grandfather back in the 60s it's been almost everywhere in Arizona during the 60s 70s and 80s. It is 4ft wide and 6ft long. It has some small draw backs. No suspension what so ever and it used an old solid beam axle that has old firestone 5x16 tires on it that are now trashed. I priced new tires and they want $185 each they are old school tires that are now specialty tires. I looked for other wheels and that would mean a wheel with zero backspacing in order to fit once again driving the price up.

I took inventory of what I have and found set of trailer tires and an old jeep axle and some wheels that will fit under the existing box very nicely, how ever now we need a new frame and leaf springs to tie it all together. I drew up some plans and did some pricing. I figured the cost to be around $200-300 including new lights safty chain and hitch coupler. When along came this beauty.

I scored this trailer for $175. It is the rear frame section from a 70s ford shorted pickup. It has a 9in rear with 31spline axles. Brand new LED lighting and saftey chains.

The plan is to pull the 9in axle out and sale it to recover some money, the tires are trashed and my trailer tires are too narrow to mount on the existing tires anyways so I will be swapping my D-35 axle in and doing a spring under conversion to drop the hight some. Drop my grandfathers old box on the back and add a rack on the very front for fuel cans and water storage. I will also be hooking up a parking brake to the trailer to aid in keeping it from rolling when not hooked up to tow rig. Future plans will be adding flat fenders, bed lining the whole box, making a lid, and water storage under the frame.
