"gimp" is also available via "portableapps.com" I use it as a photoshop lite. Seems to bee good. I use it and would recommend it. I am a basic user so i have not pushed into the advance stuff and cannot provide feedback on advance options.

Meet the GIMP site has some how-to videos. You can do a search in the itunes store to find the podcast link. Might help get started. A friend of mine uses it for all his editing.

great program. I've only been using it for a couple months, but it's very powerful and not hard to get used to.

Gimp is great for what it is. If you don't have the coin for Photoshop or need the advanced features of Photoshop (99.99999% of us don't), then run Gimp.

Just download it and try it. It's free so no cost except download costs. You're on a Mac so completely removing the program is as simple as deleting gimp.app from /Applications. No registry keys to worry about getting screwed up or anything like that.

I'm a casual user of Photoshop on Mac OS X. I've used Gimp on and off since the late 90s - whenever it first came out as a usable program so have used Gimp quite a bit.

The only thing I ever miss from Photohop when I still occasionally run Gimp is the ease of use of a "Save for web" function. Otherwise I can pretty much do everything in Gimp that I can do in Photoshop. In fact, since I don't use a lot of the functions of Photoshop I suspect I could get along quite nicely with with Photoshop Elements. I do some GUI element design work in Photoshop, not sure if that kind of work can be done in Elements.
