Gone to Moab! Well, not really...

The words, Gone to Moab, describes many of my desert jaunts. However, I rarely visit or even pass through the bustling town in southeastern Utah. It's just easy when someone asks; I respond with a simple reply--headed to Moab. This past weekend, my friend Tyson and I headed to Moab. It was Outerbike Weekend, so Moab was going to be busy. With a smeark on my face, I told Tyson that we woudn't see too many people. Tyson has only been to the deserts of Utah once. He had heard of my jaunts to the area but never could quite comprehend what we (my family) did there...So, here it is...

We left Park City rather late and pulled into a backcountry campsite I know about right around Green River, Utah. I pulled over and asked Tyson to get the gate. His response, "why?"

"This is our campsite."

He was bewildered but excited knowing we were about to explore the backcountry beauty of canyon country.

The stars were out as we got the cots ready. Sleeping out under the stars is outstanding. For Tyson, this was his first experience. He might be a changed man...

The morning was ours for enjoyment. Coffee, photos, small talk...A desert ramble was ensuing...

We explored a side canyon for signs of the past.

Not too many other souls out and about on this day.

We headed further south to the outskirts of Moab. Moab has been in full force on putting in some new single track trails. We had to check them out.

Afterwards, I told Tyson that we would check out this campsite high above the Green River. Not really understanding, he thought that woud be awesome. Off we went...We made it just in time to see the light show in the clouds.

The morning light revealed the best campsite of Tyson's life. My response, "really?" He said, "look at this!" I couldn't argue with his logic.

Tyson and I left "the best campsite ever" to find some signs of of the past. The Anasazi and Freemont Indians called the Moab area home for hundreds of years. Their rockart is everywhere. It was time to find some...

What did they mean? No idea...but, it's cool to see these Bear Paw Petroglyphs.

Haven't seen this before...This artist got some talent! Right around the corner...

Afterwards, we packed up and headed into Arches via the Willow Springs Road. Tyson had no idea where the road was leading us...I told him...be patient. He was stunned that the road spit us out right at Balance Rock and the people! I said we will get away from the crowds. Pulling into the jammed packed lot at Park Avenue; Tyson had his doubts.

Packs loaded and up we went...

The views were outstanding and Tyson was taking it all in...

The surroundings and lighting were simply magical!

This was Tyson's first canyoneering experience. He was "into" it...Learning rope work.

He also learned the importance of this little device.

The evening light was simply stunning. And, we did not see a soul. Not sure where the people were??? I think we were above them the whole time:)

With our packs loaded into the truck, we were off to find a campsite. This will do...

The final day dawned...It was a great, pleasant morning. Coffee, oatmeal, and small talk about heading back to the "real world". Tyson informed me that "he got it..." He got what we do down in the desert. He understood the draw of the desert. I don't think this will be his last desert ramble.

After packing up camp, we had one more mission to complete. We tried to find some hard to reach arches...Success!

The desert views never get old.

So, when you hear the words, "gone to Moab", you might want to ask, "really, where?"
Better yet, go explore it yourself:) Get out and enjoy! Until next time...

Yep, I've spent many an hour out there sitting on a high rock with a beer watching a sunset and a few mornings watching a sunrise wishing I had a hot cup of coffee.

Thanks for taking us along. Beautiful scenery, rock art, biking, hiking, solitude. A great adventure!

The final day dawned...

Willing to give out GPS coordinates on the final night's camp site?? Or is it secret stuff :)

BTW, we are desert rats and love the wide open spaces. In a week or two, we are doing a part of the Kiowa National Grasslands and will do a trip report after. Possibly the Rita Blanca as well.
