Good NEWS for Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Coming Back

While this sort of post is probably more appropriate for the Fireside Chat section, the linked article does include information relevant to overlanders who like the Mitsubishi SUVs. The article says the company is working on a new hybrid drivetrain and 8 speed transmission for a new version of the Pajero (aka Montero). It's not clear if Mitsubishi will bring the Montero back to North America, but at least they have enough resources to develop a new model.

The hybrid drivetrain uses a small (maybe 2.0L) gasoline engine plus electric motor to drive the front wheels, and a second electric motor to drive the rear wheels. So no transfer case or drive shaft needed. This allows the vehicle body to sit lower, while providing the same ground clearance. The electric motors alone can produce about 250 ft lb of torque, and can power the vehicle up to freeway speed on electric power only. Range on battery power only is about 30 miles, according to Mitsubishi.

The hybrid drivetrain will appear in the 2015 Outlander as well as the Evo.
