Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

I think my quest to find the best all around tire may be over, I mean a true ALL TERRAIN tire. I've tried several different brands, I've tried AT's and MT's. I've always had great luck with the BFG AT's and MT's but found the AT's a little tame for some conditions (not many) and the MT's were usually overkill for a daily driver that saw only a little mud.
I got a set or load range E 256/75-16 Duratrac's and have been very impressed so far, be it asphalt, snow or mud. Fantastic tires if you can get past the way they look (I think they're a little ugly).

I have to disagree about the looks of them. I think they look fantastic!
But, I agree with everything else. These tires are amazing. I was very skeptical about going back to GY, but I love these tires!

I think Duratracs will end up being my next tires. I agree about the looks though - not a fan of the sidewall "bling".

i was trying to get those from my work a truck got impunded and its pretty much junk but the "tow manager" said he wants 800 for them i told him they were going to junk anyways but he probably will keep them and "use them for his boat" thats what he says about subs, and other stuff but anyways once my duelers run out im gonna get them

Were these the regular Duractracs or the MT/R with Kevlar?
How did they handle in cold weather and snow?

Duratrac's, and they own the snow! I have a friend running the new Kevlar MT/R and he says they suck in the snow, he's not happy.

I can confirm that the MTR/Kevloars suck in snow. In mud too.
Great on street and rocks of all kinds, even slick wet rocks.

Everyone that I know with Duratracs loves them.

Ive had both MTR's and Duratracs(currently). Duratracs are a very aggressive AT tire that bridges the gap between AT and MUD. This has sacrifice- Mild humm on hwy and aggressive tread, Not a "mudder".
It is a perfect desert and mountain tire. I have found Duratracs are great in snow and ice, durable against sharp rocks and cactus so far (that awesome sidewall helps), doesnt dig too deep in sand and airs down well, OK in all but the gummiest of mud, road manners are great though they do have a noticeable humm if it bothers you. I love them as an AT tire that sees alot of both road and dirt, rules the snowy roads. If i was a city dweller and commuted, i might go for a less aggressive tire.
On my Tundra they are load range E. The hum is not bothersome.

Add another Duratrac fan. I've only got a couple hundred miles on mine (265/75/16 E) but they're quiet and smooth on the highway, great in packed snow, slush, slop. Haven't gotten them into deep snow yet (right now all we've got is FS roads/trails with 4+ feet, or hardpack). I think they look great, and the ~32x10.5 size is perfect on my FJ60.

Another Duratrac fan here. The hum isn't bothersome, and doesn't contribute to driver fatigue - at least for me. I do agree these aren't the best-looking tires, however I am extremely pleased with their all-around comfort and performance. I have several thousand miles on them so far, and wear is adequate. 245/75R16C

Thought I'd chime in as well - I love my Duratracs (265/76/16 load range C). I have almost 35,000 miles on them and they're still going strong. I drive 80 miles a day to work and the hum doesn't bother me at all, even with 35k of wear on them, and that's coming from someone who swore off aggressive tires forever after owning a pair of BFG M/T KMs (not KM2s).

Mud: I've had them in mud once, and I had no problems whatsoever getting decent traction and keeping forward momentum, but I'm not into mudding and avoid it when possible so I don't have much to compare it to.

Snow: I've had them on snow-packed roads and they did GREAT. My father's Tundra with Michelin street tires was all over the road and I was moving along just fine. I was really amazed with how much traction I had while other cars were skidding all over the place. Granted, I was in 4WD, so I'm sure that was part of the advantage.

Ice: I've only used them in ice one time (city streets and overpasses), and as with mud, I rarely drive in ice so I don't have much to compare them to. I didn't have much traction, but in 4HI I could coast along just fine and seemed to have a reasonable amount of steering as long as I wasn't jumping on the gas or brake.

I agree with the comment in the OP's review on his blog about them picking up and throwing rocks - I park in a dirt/gravel parking lot at work, and a lot of the time when I leave work my paint gets peppered for about the first 1/8th mile.

When these wear out, I'll definitely be buying another set. For me they're the perfect balance of being aggressive enough to go wherever I need them to, while still being tolerable for daily city driving and highway trips. On my next set I might go with a load range E to get the beefier sidewall since that seems to be the Achilles heel of this tire.

I put them on the EarthRoamer Jeep to replace the MTRs, and it helped transform the highway performance of the truck. Once the Oregon rain hit, I was very pleased to be driving on a pretty capable tire that is so secure in its handling. Highly recommended.

FWIW, these are load range E tires--XV-JPs are way heavy--but I haven't noticed any compliance problems.
