Update: Ford is selling Land Rover to Tata

Tata has lots of cash to invest and is the major player in India for trucks & SUVs. Of all the groups trying to buy LR, Tata is the one most likely to bring real Land Rovers to North America.

But considering design cycle times don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen. Just about everything that LR introduced since Ford purchased LR are designs set into motion by BMW. Unless Tata throws the existing under development designs away we will be seeing basically Ford designs for 5 to 7 years.

I'm wondering who owns the new diesel V8 & V6 designs. The engines are shared by Jag & LR, but they are built in a Ford engine plant, the development was paid for by Ford and Ford is planning to put versions of these engines into upcoming Ford trucks. I'm not positive but I think the 2.4L diesel in the new Defenders came from Volvo. The 6 speed gearboxes are Ford.

This is all part of the stuff that needs to be worked out in the sale. For a few years Ford sold Freelanders with BMW engines.

Maybe the Freeloader came with a BMW engine, but it was mated to a POS gearbox (JATCO), which is made in France. I'm glad they got rid of the Freeloader with that single speed transfer. Now they got this other hunk of crap, the LR2 which is probably a decent street car, but isn't deserving of the green oval on the front in my opinion.

I wish they would bring those Defender 110's here. If the market got flooded with them, we could all afford one.

I can really understand where Landrover is coming from by not marketing it here in the U.S. Afterall, they wouldn't be able to sell a box shaped vehicle, like a jeep, with 4 doors, like a jeep, with factory lockers, like a jeep, and a super low range x-case, like a jeep, with hard and soft tops, like a jeep and aggressive mud tires, like a jeep, all mounted on solid axles, like a jeep. And golly gee....NO ONE wants a diesel here in the U.S. like jeep offers..........

Yes, very, very sarcastic! I mean really, if they can ruin, I mean, reconstruct the dash with all that plastic then why couldn't they add the airbags while they were in there? Just another excuse not to sell the Defender here....

haha I figured as much.... Yeah what's the excuse on the air bags now? How ridiculous. Those things would sell like hot cakes over here. I love my Land Cruisers, but I also own a couple of Rovers and they are fun too.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could go back to "trucks" having taller tires without low profile sidewalls?!

new engine,
new transmission,
new seating,
new facia,
no airbags.

Sorry America. Can I interest you in an LR2?

Defenders were expensive before they would be expensive again.

Jeep=1 Land Rover=0

The real losers in the whole thing is us.....we know who we are.

I believe the diesel is from Peugeot, I'd confirm it but I'm too lazy to look it up.:archaeolo
