Ham ext speaker options

I will be mounting my Icom IC-2820H radio in my FJ soon and looking for external speaker options. I'm curious, has any tried using a small door mounted tweeter as an ext speaker? Seems like you could flush mount one in your door panel easy enough.

Good idea? Bad idea? Better idea?

Thanks for your advice

Bad idea. Most sound system speakers have completely wrong frequency responses for communications purposes. Using a tweeter would be the worst of choices.

This is the best external c.b. speaker I have used NAPA pt # 730-4799

I tried an OEM door mounted audio speaker for my ham radio but wasn't happy with the results. A bit pricey at $49.95, but this Yaesu external speaker delivers very clear voice audio from my ham radio that seems to cut through the rumble of off-road travel. You might find an equivalent ICOM speaker that matches the specs of your radio.

My ears have a lot of miles on them and need the help :)

Radio Shack sells a small extension speaker for this purpose.

I have one mounted to the top of the dash in my FJ Cruiser, alongside the windshield pillar. Don't have any pictures handy, but I could get some if you'd find that helpful.

It's out of the way, and sounds reasonably good. I'm happy with it.

The cutoff frequency of a tweeter would caution me in suggesting that. A small midrange our dual range would be much better.

I'm in the same boat. I have a remote speaker, but the unit is currently located under a seat and is impossible to hear while on the road in the Jeep. I need to move it, but the unit is too large, so I also need a nice small unit. If you find one, post it up here!

I'm in a similar boat as the OP because my mobile set up is in the dash and it has the speaker covered. The speakers shown are a little big and was hoping for something smaller. Are there any flush mount options.

$4.00 voice speaker via eBay. And I mounted it above my head. Works great as my 2m speaker. As unobtrusive as they get...

You can buy an el-cheapo MFJ external speaker at ham radio outlet. On my Toy 1985 FJ60 I zip tied the speaker right in-between the headrest posts on the driver seat. That way the audio is right behind you and you can turn it down so it does not bother any passengers.

The MFJ speaker is surprisingly good given the price and MFJ's spotty reputation for quality. I'd use either one of those or if you really want to do it right, get one of the old Motorola Syntor series or similar powered speakers. Those things kick *** :)

Very clean install!

x2 that is sweet! I'd been thinking about doing a permanent install similar to what Barlowrs did, but I may try to go with something like that instead. I've come to realize, after having my speaker in the passenger side footwell up under the dash, that having it too far from the driver means that at highway speeds you have to turn the volume up so high that it starts to distort the speaker. Then the Mrs gets irritated because I'm rattling her ear drums, and for some strange reason she doesn't find the ham radio chatter quite as interesting as I do :bike_rider:.

This problem could also have something to do with the fact that I'm using a MFJ-281 speaker, which, as others have said, probably isn't the highest quality speaker out there.

spressomon - how'd you secure the speaker to the top of the headliner (or inside of the roof)? What are the little black things at the four corners of the speaker that I'm guessing have something to do with the mounting?

Do you know the specs on that speaker? I've looked on ebay and found a ton of different types but I would love to do something similar. Should I search voice speaker?
