Ham ext speaker options

x2 that is sweet! I'd been thinking about doing a permanent install similar to what Barlowrs did, but I may try to go with something like that instead. I've come to realize, after having my speaker in the passenger side footwell up under the dash, that having it too far from the driver means that at highway speeds you have to turn the volume up so high that it starts to distort the speaker. Then the Mrs gets irritated because I'm rattling her ear drums, and for some strange reason she doesn't find the ham radio chatter quite as interesting as I do :bike_rider:.

This problem could also have something to do with the fact that I'm using a MFJ-281 speaker, which, as others have said, probably isn't the highest quality speaker out there.

spressomon - how'd you secure the speaker to the top of the headliner (or inside of the roof)? What are the little black things at the four corners of the speaker that I'm guessing have something to do with the mounting?

The 4-black 'dots' you see are just plastic push style retaining clips I picked up at our local well stocked Ace Hardware store. If not being the impatient type I would have stopped by the hobby store and painted them beige to match the headliner.

I made a cardboard template for the holes then used a new black Flare marker to transfer onto the headliner. Then used a very clean pencil tipped solder iron to drill melt the holes...all in all it really worked out great. And since its right above my head I can keep the volume low but still hear it fine as needed.

How about a Motorola mobile radio speaker, They are tuned for voice operation and that is what they are made for.
