harmonic balancer wobbles

I would pull the balancer back off and check the crank for runout.

OP, any updates? I just picked up a 98 and my HB wobbles too. It's not loose...new correct crank bolt torqued to spec...just has a slight wobble when the engine is running.

Compared it to my 97 LS and there's a slight but definite wobble to the HB. Do you know if your rig has an accident in it's past? Mine has and I'm wondering if the HB (or crank itself...hopefully not) got tweaked.

I'm planning on a water pump/timing belt job when I get back from my honeymoon next month. I'll post back with what I find...

Is the crankshaft bolt an issue on Gen 3 as well? Is it a maintenance item... meaning should I go out and replace mine right now even if I am not noticing any problems? About to hit 175k

I know this is an old post, but yes, you should replace the bolt with the new design if you have the old one. From what I hear, the old ones are prone to snapping, which would pretty much destroy your engine.

My old 1997 Montero that I sold also had some Crank Wobble. I posted about this on the 4x4wire about a year ago. I had to buy a replacement Harmonic Balancer and the Crankbolt and washer. I think EuroSonic has the Harmonic balancer that I removed. His broke off in chunks as he was removing the one that was on his vehicle.

Rad video Jay! That's exactly what mine's doing...not quite as noisy but same wobble. May have to spring for a new HB...
