Loaded the Cruiser, trailer and the kids for a couple days remote camping on the south side of the Grand Canyon. The night prior to our arrival the area received a large storm that lasted most of the night and into the morning. A backcountry permit is required to camp so we went to the backcountry office to obtain permits and maps.
Given the amount of rain the Park Ranger doubted we'd make it and so did I. Our map warned that the roads may be impassible due to mud. But we were there so why not attemt. After leaving the pavement and beginning our journey we talked talked to a local about the road condition on FR 328. He said if we headed west we'd be the only ones out that way until tomorrow.
The road pretty bad but the LC, in 4lo with the rear locked did well even pulling the Horizon. It was muddy to be sure but I felt comfortable and the LC chugged along. After about 15 miles, we came to a mud hole that ended our adventure. Perhaps we could have made it but I wasn't going to try as a solo vehicle. We turned around, found a nice campsite and kept an eye on the thunderstorms that were building. I felt anymore rain on the road and we wouldn't make it back to the pavement.
The next day, we did see a few vehicles on FR 328 but after talking to another local about road conditions we decided to save this trip for dryer weather conditions. We returned to the backcountry office, reported that we didn't make camp and the Ranger extended our permit until October. He said they only send Rangers out to that part of the canyon every three weeks or so. Very few people venture out that far. I look forward to returning.
