No matter what you do, the first thing you want to do is make sure it is safe. Brakes as good as they can be and system doesn't leak? If it's so old they've got 9" brakes, at least upgrade to 11" drums. Steering secure? Linkage tight? Suspension secure and not ready to fall off? Wheel bearings good and nuts are tight? Turn signals and brake lights work? Isn't going to catch on fire or break in half when driving is it?
Second thing you want to make sure of: is it reliable. Wiring good and not frayed? Connections all good? Charging system works? All the lights work (also falls under safety)? Fuel system reliable and leak free? No vacuum leaks? Engine's got a good tune-up so won't leave you stranded? Will it run and stay running?
If you can't say "yes" to safe and reliable, you shouldn't be taking it out on the roads.
Once you can say "yes" to the above, then you can start thinking of modifying or "transforming" it.
I understand old Jeeps; I've got a 46 Willy CJA.
