Headlight Conversion for RRC advice

I am looking to upgrade my stock headlights. I have read some posts about autopal and Hellas H4 conversions. Does anybody have any advice on the matter?

Thanks.

Hella's are great quality and long lasting. Don't pick up the cheap lights, the reflectors are garbage and they will fall apart in short order.

Ditto on Hella H4s! Go ahead and replace the fogs with hellas too, if you still have the fogs. Also, another suggestion is the Silverstars. I had them in my 91 RR. They are a bit brighter than the Hella H4s but the beam is a bit narrower than the Hellas. I dont really have a preference for Silverstars over the Hellas or vice versa, but they both work well. Definitely go with quality lighting versus lowest cost.

I'd upgrade the wiring harness first (relay type, ARB, etc). If you still want more light then you will already have the wires to handle the power. You can burn out the switch if you run higher than normal (55/60) bulbs with out a relay harness.

HID's are a legal option for vehicles with 7" round headlights, provided you replace the complete light assembly.

I *love* the 7-inch round Hella H4 lights. Had them for years in my 1981 Toyota Pickup, and I sure wish I had the great optics of that system in my 2001 Tacoma. Anyone's H4 conversion, but especially Hella, highly recommended.

So I would just need Hella's plug n play housing and bulbs correct?

IIRC, the H4 conversions should be a simple replacement for your existing lamps in your Range Rover. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to swap out existing lamps for your new H4's.

That's what I was thinking. I didn't know for sure if I needed to upgrade the harness as well.

You'll see a big improvement from the H4 lights alone. A new harness isn't strictly required but you may want to do it to get the highest possible voltage to the lamps.

You can get amazing lighting by just doing what was recommended above. Put in some relays so the voltage goes direct from the battery instead of traveling through the switch. This alone will improve your lights AND make your headlight switch last longer. Next go with some high quality lights like the Hella or Cibie H4's. These have a super clean cutoff of the light pattern so you can run 80/100 bulbs instead of the 55/60 watt bulbs that are stock. The key is in how sharply you can aim the lights. A quality lense will allow you to run the bigger wattage bulbs without blinding oncoming traffic. This is a great resource for improved lighting: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/

I have run some of the HID conversions and they are nice but seem to cause more glare than a well setup H4 with good bulbs.

hope this helps

how about the 7 inch LED headlights? I had a set and wanted to do a converion for my p38... the were awesome and bright.
I would have to change the holders for the lights to work , but you have a classic they would bolt right in...
The army uses them in their vehicles now and they are DOT approved

All of my RRCs now have H4s. One of my '95s is getting a HD wiring harness and some new bulbs (still 55W, but a bit brighter)
