Heat Guard for Synthetic Line

Some questions for the SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) here.
I have a Ramsey REP 9.5E and will be replacing my Winch Cable with Synthetic Line within the next few months.

-My winch specs say that it will hold 15' of 5/16" cable on the first layer of the drum so do I need to have at least 15' of heat guard? I notice that most heat guards are 10' and don't want to leave 5' of Synthetic Line exposed if it needs to be protected.

-How many times has anyone used the power out and heated up the drum? What was the situation if you did?

I'm not an avid off roader right now but I may in the future. I also usually lean toward the rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Thanks,
Dion

if ti were me, i would buy 2 heat guards and have 5' to much as opposed to not enough. i'm just taking a guess here, as i have kniow experience with the synthetic line, but i would think that you would want to do everything possible to eleminate failure. i always assumed that the eat guard was there to protect the first layer on the drim from heat, therefore i would want the complete first layer of rope with the heat shield on it.

no first hand experience, just my $.02. hope this helps

I agree with the better to be safe than sorry approach so I would go for the heat shield across the full first wrap.

That being said. I also run a Ramsey 9500 with synthetic line and I have no idea if my first layer wrap has any heat shield on it or not.

I can see situations where you would need to use a power out approach to get down or help someone else down an obstacle but I personally have never had to do that in many years of off road driving.

Thanks for the responses.

I like the LCP but was trying to save some $$$$. The more I think about it, I will probably go with the LCP instead of a heat guard. I hope I never get into a situation where I heat up the drum but it will be nice not to kill my line if I do.

Geez, this is a time when you, can go cheap and NOT suffer for it. Find a piece of single jacket fire hose. the kind you see in the red cabinets in office buildings. slice it and put it on the drum, then lay down the first wrap. You will be golden. Also if use get twice as much as you need, the rest can be used as a cover for the line to slow/ prevent UV damage. you can also use it as a corner guard. if you should need to have line touching a ledge, or over trees.

I'm no expert on electric winches, but I seem to remember soemthing about drum heat only being a problem on winches that use a brake to control power out? If that's correct, then I imagine that only those that use a spur gear rather than a worm would be a problem. I might well be wrong, and besides, your winch might well have a brake!

I like the idea of wrapping the drum to insulate it from the line. Is that what you did with your winch drum PaulesAU?

I have a Fire Station down the street that may have a dead hose laying about. So, I may not have to resort to larceny to get my supply.

My winch is the spur gear kind and uses a brake for power out. It would heat up with extended power out usage.

Keep those ideas coming.
Thanks,

We recently changed to a 12' heat guard because I noticed my winch wasn't totally covered with 10' on the drum. Last I checked it is enough for most common winch drum sizes.

If you need more we can always custom make it, I don't think we will charge you that much more for some more heat guard. Option B is two of them, which should be cheaper.

Ordered my LCP rope (and a bunch of other stuff) yesterday. Looking forward to getting my winch/winch bumper setup going.

Yes I did/do. As it was Available for free, the stuff you'll find at the station house will most likely double jacket. this won't be a problem, just a little harder to work with. I carry a couple pieces for abrasion sleeves.

I haven't stopped at the Fire Station yet but I'm going to check with the Fire Marshal at my Plant too for a defective hose. I'll order 2 heat guards with my winch rope in case I don't get the fire hose before I get the winch line. I just ordered my aluminum fairhead and I've been drinkin so I'll be ordering my new winch rope in a few minutes.:sombrero:

Thanks for the responses,
