Help me figure out my axle length

It’s really simple

Trailer axle in segments is:

Hub face to tire edge (8”), tire edge to frame clearance (2”), trailer frame width (60”), frame to tire clearance (2”), tire to hub face (8”)

80 inches.

Deduct the total width of spacers.

Done.

Now, to further complicate stuff.....

60” is frame width.

If you’re using 2”x2” material you need to deduct half of each tube to get your spring center distance...... ie: 58”

If you’re using 2.5” material. Half of each tube is 1.25” so you’d deduct 2.5” from frame width to come up with spring center. Or 57.5”

And so on

Copy. So theoretically when i place my order I’d tell them If they are going to be welding on the spring perches that I need a 3500lb dexter axle with drum brakes and I want my spring perches welded on at 58” centers with a 76” hub face? Perfect. I’m understanding now. Sorry for all the confusion and thanks for helping me out.

And since your good at answering all my questions do you think that 2” clearance from my tire to the trailer frame is good enough clearance?

If you’re using standard trailer springs, yes.

If you’re using something that will articulate more than a standard trailer spring, then you’ll have to figure out how much it twists under articulation, to see if 2” space is enough.

Yes, that’s the measurement if you’re using 2” spacers.

No problemo for the help. Glad to help out.

The other thing to think of is fenders.

If you’re planning on a standard trailer fender mounted to the body of the trailer you’re gunna need a 10” fender just to get to the hub face, plus the length to cover the rest of the tire.

Depending on tire size a regular trailer fender might not work very well.

I’m running a ~32” tire on my trailer and I had to make the fenders as I couldn’t find anything that fit with my dimensions.

Good luck.

The idea of taping out the trailer on the floor is good to help you see what is going on but it sounds like you understand things now.
