98 Montero, lost all oil. Dont think motor died, just a massive leak. Woefully underprepared, no tools, thought i was gonna get away with it, truck had done great for 1200 miles, half of that through storms.

Would appreciate things to look for when the sun comes up as likely culprits, or a hand if anyone is nearish.

Oil spewed out somewhere driver's side of motor, lower half. Oil level just over full 94 miles ago, had not lost or burned any measurable amount in the 1200 miles prior.

Oil filter backed off. Damndest thing. Couldnt get to it without tools so i kicked the plastic grill out and threaded my arm in. All good, getting oil change now. Dont think it had right filter.

Here is another cause for oil leaks that sometimes happens: Sometimes when the oil filter is removed, the rubber seal on the old filter will stay on the engine. It's easy to miss. Then, when ya screw on the new filter, the old seal and new seal can stack one on top of the other. But in real life, usually the old seal moves a bit when the new rubber seal rubs against it. It can either: seal really well until the next oil change, Seal just enough until enough oil pressure blows out, Not seal at all (what I"ve usually seen). If you take your vehicle to get the oil changed, you just never know how big of a hurry the oil change guy was in and if he looked to make sure the old seal came off with the filter. That happened with my wife once. Worse yet, they tried to convince her the oil gushing out the engine was normal and would go away!!
