Hepco & Becker and Andy Strapz Luggage Solution

My 1988 Honda NX650 had only a factory luggage rack and a short list of appropriate aftermarket parts considering it was only offered for two years here in the United States, '88 and '89.

Wanting to develop the bike into a functional platform for extended travel I began to search for luggage. Honda did not offer a factory pannier rack and the search for aftermarket products made specifically for the NX650 quickly broadened outside of US manufacturers since the NX650 is more commonly known throughout the rest of the world as the popular Dominator and has strong aftermarket product support.

Hepco & Becker (HB) of Germany makes a set of pannier racks and a top rack specifically for this bike, and Eurotech Motor Sports in California carries Hepco & Becker and can order anything they make! Chris at Eurotech was able to contact Hepco & Becker directly to source exactly what I was looking for.

The ultimate solution Eurotech helped me figure out was a set of HB pannier racks, a HB top rack, a HB 42L Gobi Top Case and a set of Andy Strapz Expedition panniers. Here are the details of the installation:

Everything arrived well packed.

The Hepco & Becker top rack is designed to work with their latch system found on any of their top boxes.

There is a bracket on the forward facing side of the top box that wedges under the curved portion of the rack and there is a locking latch on the bottom of the top box which uses the same key as the lid latches.

Mounting the top rack was straightforward. Hepco & Becker supplies four longer bolts to replace four of the stock bolts. I had attempted to mount the rack further forward to bring the weight closer to center but the location will not allow the mounting latch on the top box to engage. The rack needs to be located on the rear four bolts of the factory assembly.

For the top box I went with the Hepco & Becker 42L Gobi Top Case It's light, durable, secure, easily installed or removed and it has a set of bars on top for lashing your extras like a jacket or dry bag.

Hepco & Becker Pannier Racks

After the top box was installed it was time to tackle the installation of the HB Pannier Racks. It's a simple project but some care should be taken lay everything out first to make sure you have it right since the instructions only come in German.

There are two hoops with exhaust shields, two front braces and one rear cross brace. Once bolted up the system is rock solid!

The Andy Strapz Expedition Bags drape over the top of the bike with wide hook&loop straps and then secure to the pannier racks with an additional strap near the bottom. One nice feature of these bags is that they can expand from 15L to 25L capacity using the roll top.

There will be more than enough room for extended travel with a total of 92L of available storage space!

Good looking bike and set up. I wonder why Honda stopped with this bike(at least in the us) It looks a lot like a ktm 640.
any trips planned?

Thanks Chris,

I think that it was a bit before its time, the US market was not very excited about the Enduro styling of this bike back in the late 80s so it never took hold.

Good lord, thats one heck of a case you've got on the back there! You'll have to tell me how you like the Andy Strapz stuff, I'm considering picking those up as well, although right now I'm leaning towards the Giant Loop bag.

Thanks!
I'm also installing a set of Hepco & Becker engine guards / crash bars that I sourced through Chris at Eurotech Motor Sports.

I'll cover the installation of those as well.

McVick-
on your way to expo, you should head north and meet up with us. There will be 3 of us blazing a path to expo from The Lake Tahoe area...planing on slabbing it on small roads to St George and then taking dirt track the rest of the way...
