High Desert wandering - Central Oregon

I have recently moved to central oregon, so I am still just picking roads and finding out where they lead. With a maze of BLM land out here, I could wind up in idaho before I hit something. hope you like it.

I long wanted to make a run to Suplee & the Strawberries from Powell Butte without doing any more pavement than crossing it. Sadly my home base in Powell Butte is no longer.

well I went out looking for some sunset picture oppurtunities but the next storm system was just coming over the mountains, ended up do some night wheeling, and took some single track back to the highway. Im loving it out here.

God's Country

We lived in the Oregon high desert somewhat between Burns and John Day. There is some of the best country for back country touring in that area. There are many old two track roads that can take a fellow up to some very beautiful mountain meadows that just scream with spring colors.

In fact, Mo and I were just talking about how we would like to take a couple of weeks and go back up there for old times sake. Just not too sure if I would be willing to come back if I did go back.

Judging from the pictures, I am guessing that you are in the Bend or Redmond area, eh? From there east is all good and very sparsely populated.

You are right, we have 8 inches of snow and Im lovin it.

There are some great hot springs in the Oregon desert that would make awesome winter destinations if they are accessible - not sure they are. Alvord Hot Springs is probably easy to get to since it's off a major road, but Willow Creek may be too far off the beaten path.

My little hot springs trip a couple of years ago really spoiled me. Hey, there's nothing like "camping out" in the wild and still having a nice hot bath every morning! :elkgrin:

Have you made it to Glass Butte yet? Its between Bend and Burns on Hwy 20. There's great obsidian hunting, beautiful views and rough roads. :truck:
