2002 Montero sport owner here, have owned and run a few jeeps (1992 yj, 2002 kj, 1999 xj, 1995 zj, 2000 tj) and a couple of Toyotas ( a 1993 pickup and an fj80)... I enjoy owning the oddball though. My 02 sport is new to me and to be honest I mainly bought because it angers my mechanic (a Toyota guy)... We are good friends from high school but I like being the underdog. Besides, I am a firm believer in that a real off roader knows his own rig, carry's spare parts for it, can fix it, get it unstuck, and doesn't care about the brand. Will a good set of tires fit on it? Yeah. Are lockers available? Yeah. Can I carry a fair amount of gear in it? Yeah. Does it have real 4x4? Yeah. Can I drive it well? Heck yeah. Those are my criteria and if anybody doesn't like it, they have their own check books to vote with. I accept all that accept me.

I had and dearly loved two Raiders. I had 31x10.50r15s on both, the first one I had was an 87, the other one was an 89. I used them both extensively off road and they were great. Unfortunately, they both died of cracked heads. I repaired them both, but they left a bad taste in my mouth. I went on to Toyotas and never looked back.
My Dad loves Monteros (he's had five) but now he has an Endeavor.

I assume your raiders were the 2.6L variety? Cracked heads are a very common result of overheating.

If you have a v6 model, you'd have probably stuck with the Montero. Mine have been pretty reliable especially when I sometimes drive like an Andretti.:smiley_drive:

That said, Toy's aren't bad but I just like being a bit more unique and owning a rig you rarely get to see on the trail unless you're wheeling another one.

Yeah, my Raiders were 2.6s. I actually considered a Montero Sport before I got my Land Cruiser, I would buy another Mitsubishi no problem. The best car I ever had was a 1979 Dodge Colt (Lancer) that I lifted and drove all over. I paid $500 for it, drove it for ten years, then sold it for $600 :)
