Hitch Mounted Cargo Basket/Rack

Thanks for all the posts guys,

So as luck would have it the guy I was buying my hitch off had an unused cargo rack. It had being a bit of decoration at his Jeep themed restaurant. I spent the weekend getting it cleaned up and mounting my box on it. I am pretty impressed with how it turned out and works perfectly for keeping the rear area of the jeep open for my dogs.

Looks real fine, can you still access the spare? or will you count on no flats for the duration of your trip?

The spare is an issue. Both because I will need to remove the box/rack to access it. But also because of the size of it. I only just picked this truck up last week, and don't currently have a spare for it. I am running 33x12.5 tires, which could present a issue with the room from the back of the box to the tire mount. I have measured and there should be room. I'll post up some pics as soon as I get it mounted.

The rack actually has some small holes on the rear where I am thinking of mounting some small backup lights that would connect through a trailer wiring harness.

I am hoping for a flat free trip, but you always gotta prepare for the worst.

the last time I made this trip, my co-pilot drove for 2 hours through a white out on the rim before realizing she had a flat.

You might want to look for a used 33x9.50 to use as the spare. It would be lighter, cheaper and still get you off the trail or all the way home to where you could repair/replace your 33x12.50. Would likely fit the rack/ basket better as well.

Hitch rack basket,thumbs up! two!!!

Hello! Old post, I know, however I used a folding hitch haul for two long trips this past summer into the James bay region Quebec (Trans-Tiaga road) long, gravel, remote road and I carried 4 5 gal. gas cans and my awning plus stove and lantern, worked perfectly! Since mine is the folding kind and with it thus loaded and the pin to keep it from folding out it would still move up enough to solve departure angles..... the end would drag.... and would not hang up, it can fold up about 10 in. with no problems. (used the Hi-lift to jack it up I might have a friend weld a piece of flat stock on the underneath as a small skid plate tho. I also used a factory made anti-rattle bracket which solved the wiggle issue. My truck is a Ford Ranger 4x4 with a Leer topper and Thule racks/MOAB basket/kayak cradles for my boat and 2nd spare tire, misc other supplies. I mounted reflective driveway stakes on the corners w/reflective tape all around the hitch haul, works fine I might use this set up next trip, Trans-Labrador road around West to East from northern NY. stay safe, mjmcdowell
