Hood mounted jack info/pics

Due to the way I am designing my rig, I don't want the weight of my hi-lift at the rear of my rig. I was tossing around the idea of a hood mount like the little jeeps use. Maybe including a shovel with it. Any pros/cons on this one?

My concerns so far are:

Jack in my line of sight while driving.

Added weight when I pop the hood
(It's a jeep, so the hood will need to be opened)

The weight will be pretty much over the hinge, so it won't be too noticeable. Good access, I would only be worried about it coming off in a collision.

not an issue for me in my LJ unlimited

if you mount it back on the hinges like mine is, you have
a ton of leverage by lifting at the front edge of the hood. if you mount it on the front...well..then you'll have problems :D

/\

pro's:
-gets the jack out of the jeep, in my case
-keeps the weight low
-keeps it ready to use
-mines weathered already, i just squirt some grease on the pins and go to town
-if there is a front end accident, the jack will be moving forward..away from my kids and wife. thats all i care about.
-looks pimp. :)

OldCJ5,
There are a number of guys on the east cost that have this and for every one there are folks who do not like the mounting location sighting the possibility of eating it during a crash......I have my own opinion on that but will leave that up to you.
It is a viable location and at the hood hinge area I do not think that it will be a vision obstacle...hell, LR guys went around with a spare tyre on the bonnets for years.
I have also seen a guy who had a shovel mounted underneath his hood on a Jeep. I could try and find pics if you desire.

at any rate, you will find folks for and against it, and to each their own. I have a roof rack, and aux fuel can on the rear of my Jeep....some folks do not like either but for me it is form follows function. I require it and use it in that configuration. Good luck with your install!
