House Unimog - sort of like a camper

This small house, called House Unimog, is the result of a collaboration by Wezel Architektur's and Fabian Evers Architecture. The two studios combined their technical know-how and creativity to develop this simple, but beautiful and efficient home in Germany.

The unusual house is sited next to a heavily trafficked road in Tübingen, it's surrounded by a mixture of multi-story residential and agricultural buildings. The design consists of two main volumes; the ground floor acts as a spacious garage to house the owner’s large Mercedes Unimog truck, and the upper level of the home is dedicated to the living quarters.

House Unimog was designed and built on a "very tight" budget, 175,000 Euros ($238,190). To save money they created a home that's structurally efficient, doubling up on structural materials to act as interior finishes (OSB). The overall aesthetic is adopted from the surrounding farmhouses with its own contemporary interpretation.

To minimise the buildings footprint (and costs) the two main functional spaces were stacked on top of one another. The elevated living spaces allowed the architects to take advantage of the views; they were able to orient window openings away from the busy street and focus them on the landscape.

Unlike the living quarters above, the garage doesn't have any windows. Instead it's clad with translucent polycarbonate sheeting which creates a very bright interior, without any outward views at the street level. The two types of cladding on the upper and lower levels are also in complete contrast with each other - one is verging on white, the other on black.

The side of House Unimog that faces away from the road features a staircase that leads up to a loggia. The loggia offers panorama views of the Germany landscape. The glass patio doors open up to an open plan living room, kitchen and dining space. You'll also find a bedroom and bathroom, all of which are finished in OSB. The windows openings have been positioned so as to take advantage of the neighbourhood.

Interesting to think two design companies had to come up with that plan.
I drew up plans like this 25 years ago on napkins at a local bar, took the napkins to the lumber yard to be used as a materials list, built it myself on weekends with a few friends and didn't have nearly 30,000 when all done

But nice job on it

I love the translucent pane;s for the garage - great idea. We will be "down sizing" our home one of these days, the kids are moving out and we don't need six bedrooms for the two of us :)

I like the minimalist look, but it also looks like they went a bit overboard in the garage - nothing there at all. I suppose the tools etc are all stored in the little room, but no works benches, no compressors, no vice etc, but an old four post lift to pick up the Unimog, right into the floor above :)

There is a trapdoor above the lift. Drive in, lift up, step down onto couch, lower Mog. Batman eat your heart out.

Looks like a straw house of "The Three Little Pigs and the Wolf." and probably expensive that it came out, probably for half the price of land or more. And, most importantly that the owner liked) and froze in the winter. The Russian currency is the 7-million. For the money you can buy an apartment in Moscow or a cottage in the area. Well, this is all my opinion.

Corrections :)

Looks like a straw house from "The Three Little Pigs and the Wolf" and somewhat expensive, perhaps half or more of that price is for the land slot. But the most important thing that owner should like it :) and it won't get frozen in the winter. This house cost 7 million rubles if converted to Russian currency. Etc...

That house is built on the tagline principle from when the Xterra came out

"Everything you need, nothing you don't"
