The head gasket went out in my 1994 Suzuki Sidekick and I was planning on upgrading anyway I have a few questions about the miles and 4runners. I am set on getting a 96-02 4Runner and i am well aware of the reliability but how many miles is to many for used T4R? I feel 8 grand for a 200,000 mile truck seems a little steep. i have found a few 5 speed which i would prefer they just all have a lot of miles. Thanks in advance and happy motoring!

"Too many" is such a relative term, so alot of people would say yes. Other's say that for a Toyota it just getting broke in.
If you can get by without a vehicle for a while and wait for a great deal to come along you will thank yourself. I would still recommend a T4R because I have always been a fan of any 4x4 with the 3.4L. Miles still matter to me though, as great as 4runners are, they still wear out. I would make sure the timing belt and water pump was done if it's anywhere close to being due. Something with 200K shouldn't be 8,000. Just keep looking around, the classified section here is good, they pop up every now and then.

In 2006, I paid $9,000 for my 97 with the front bumper, lift, 33's and roof rack. It had 136k at the time and is a 5 speed. It now has 197k and runs great. With that said, there is no way I'd pay $8,000 for it now. Things do wear out over time. I'd guess that one with 200k miles would be around $4k-$5k. Don't be afraid of a higher mileage model, especially if the owner has service records. I wouldn't hesitate to drive mine to Alaska tomorrow or through the heat of Death Valley in the summer. If you really want a 5 speed, stay patient. They do pop up from time to time. Check Yotatech and TTORA. I see them pop up most often there.

Too many miles?
While driving down the highway, you can see see the road passing under you, when you can see the motor clearly, noting how the motor twists on its motor mounts as you accelerate, you can see the tires underneath you, or you can see the drive shaft turning. Or you see an axle or transfer case on the road behind you.
