How offroad capable is an upfitted dually 4x4 Sprinter such as a Winnebago Era or Coachmen Galleria?

How far off the grid have you gotten in your 4x4 Dually Sprinter?

I've been thinking seriously about a something along the lines of an Era or Galleria, because I am fulltiming and these rigs provide, for the most part, all the living necessities.

I wanted to know if I can expect these types of vehicles to get off the beaten path in places like Joshua Tree (BLM), or death valley (saline hot springs) off the beat path.

Obviously no rock crawling, but getting out there is important to me.

I plan to increase the height of the 4x4 with an RIP agile kit, and BF Goodrich KO2, as well as a winch.

Am I completely offside here or will this rig be capable?

The 4WD aspect is not really the be-all and end-all solution

2WD with a locker diff can get in a lot farther in, rougher conditions.

Vans designed for fuel economy and paved road deliveries are just not that robust.

Even an old GMC / Chevy van conversion with an aftermarket standup roof can be a better starting point.

But nowhere nearly as good as truck based chassis platforms designed for rough unpaved use, forestry, emergency vehicles, ex military, even some school buses designed for remote snowy mountain communities.

You can go anywhere in anything, I followed a Tempo over a powerline pass but neither a Tempo nor a Sprinter/Winnebago are built to drive off road. Enough rough roads and washboard will shake everything apart. Almost every North American motorhome is built for paved roads and occasional gravel. If you are wanting to drive 4x4 rated roads, start with a Truck/SUV base. Sprinters big market is commercial delivery. Incredibly reliable and efficient on pavement. Sprinter RVs are mostly a marketing opportunity one step up from the 1980s. Great vehicles but not off roaders.
