How would you build a simple yet capable FZJ80?

Hi all,

Its time to replace our current throw away car, a 90s VW Jetta, with something more suitable for Colorado. I've been doing some looking and it seems that the 93-94 FZJ-80 Landcruiers have come down in price A LOT in the last few years! I always liked these vehicles.....

How would you recommend building a mild one? Something clean, affordable, and simple.....

Here is what I was thinking. I will be making all the armor myself. I will have my new tubing bender I am building done soon and am itching to make some stuff, so most of the ideas have a lot of tube :)

-255/85R16 Tires
-Deflare it, fix the holes, and touch up the paint.

-Very minimal lift, basically just get it to sit level, maybe just a spacer in front?

-Build a very simple front bumper.....

...or maybe one with an affordable winch?

-Then some simple tube rockers, maybe even without the kicker tube. I just need minimal protection from the bottom.

-Finally do something about the rear bumper? How has trimmed the rear frame down for a more compact bumper? I just want something minimal that wraps around the corners, but provides a good departure angle since this vehicle will be pretty low. If you have some neat pics post them up! Something like this....

or this....

-I generally don't like spare tires hanging off the back, so I would most likely build a quick removable rear cargo area spare tire mount. Hopefully if its quickly removable it won't get in the way when we need to use the full rear are area to haul something. I may even try and shove it way over to the left and up out of the way above the wheel well as much as possible.

I think that about covers the basics. I just want something simple, clean, and capable without going overboard. This will get daily driven by my very understanding S.O. and she says I will be able to steel it for mild weekend wheeling :) Maybe she will want to drive the dodge to work????

What else would you guys do? Post up pictures for ideas if you have them.

Yeah, its just bolted over the stock rear cross member? Without an FJ80 in front of me, it looks like the rear cross member sticks out a little far and more importantly, a little too far down. I only want the rear bumper to stick out a wee bit more than the rear lift gate, and provide the maximum departure angle.

This one I found is in a little too far....

I do like the nice clean looks however. This one would match well to the square tube front bumper I posted. I think it needs to stick out just far enough so that if you where to back into something vertical, like a tree, lightpost, or wall, that you wouldn't hit the rear hatch/tailgate.

once you put steel tube work on the front and back, with winch... you will want to upgrade your suspension.

If you want to stay stockish-- go for the OME "low lift" kit w/ upgraded coils and shocks. Simple and done in a hour.
So you are at a pretty normal buildup for a Mudder--- check out ih8mud for many builds to give you ideas.

Since you have a tube bender, do everything in tube including front bumper. I would! Save a lot of $$

I'm no fan of tube bumpers. I'd go with the first front bumper, and hide a winch behind it if I felt it was needed. Do something similar at the rear, but give yourself a step on top of it that you can stand on. Doesn't need to be wide, but just wide enough for a sideways foot to rest on comfortably. I'd also put boat deck traction additive in the paint on the top surface of the rear bumper.

I think I am going to do tube bumpers. Its kinda out of place on the 80s and different. I think it will help keep the weight down too. It seems like a lot of the box and plate bumpers are WAY too heavy! The 80s are light to begin with, so adding a bunch of weight is the LAST thing I want to do. I have to say though, its hard to get tube bumpers to look right, and what looks right to some might not look right to others.

Does anyone have any more pictures of 255s on 80s? Please post them if you do.

The 80 is a pretty good wheeler in stock trim. Just lose the running boards.

Are you compairing an 80's weight to a Bradley Fighting Vehicle's?

The bumpers mass makes them a saftey device. I wouldn't go too light

opps....I meant to say....fj80's are NOT light to begin with.

The stock bumpers are not that strong at all. I want more structure than stock AND more clearance, but I don't want them to be super heavy. Not to rant, but in general I think most people WAY overbuild there armor. I would feel very comfortable with 1/8" armor if it was designed correctly. I would rather the armor dent or bend than the frame. I think if your get the proper clearance you don't have to overbuild them so much because they don't hit on as much stuff :)

I just bought a '97 80 and have been contemplating this subject.

If you buy a locked truck you have a capable rig out of the box.

My plan is OME stock height spring ($350) with either Bilsteins ($270) or stock Tokikos ($100). That will give plenty of clearance for 33" tires for minimal dollars and replace some worn out parts.

I'm not looking to get into the rocks so am not to worried about armor, I would like a front bull bar type bumper for deer protection.

That's it, I'll spend the rest of my time and dollars doing a through base line on the truck (see IH8MUD forums) so it will be bullet proof.

I would build it like this.....

1993 FZJ80. De-flared, 285s, ARB Commercial bumper with a Warn 8274, OME 850/ 863 suspension system, Hanna Quality sliders, Aussie Locker in the rear, Braided SS brake hoses, dual batteries, yadda, yadda.

Bingo. Factory FF/lockers, remove the flare, stockish sized ATs, sliders, OTS bumper, done. Keep it simple. Preferably white.

Word.

The factory lockers arent even needed really...over-played by a lot of folks.

What is the best way to deflare? The stock flares leave holes that have to be patched and painted correct?

That white one is nice, but I will be building some light armor instead of buying it. Building parts instead of buying them, or me, saves me a ton of money. An ARB bumper is like what $500-$800? No offense, but I that much will buy all the steel I need, and most likely an affordable winch :) I don't know why more people don't fab up more of there own stuff? Come on guys, think out of the box a little bit!

What about little things....

-Is there any way to NOT have the exhaust dip under the frame near the front control arm? That seems like a major snag point to me? Most of the sliders I see have a guard that go over the cats too.

-I would like to use the stock 16" wheels if I get a 93-94, because well, they come with the vehicle, but has anyone used the new 285/75r17 Toyo's. That seems like a neat size perhaps (34x11)? You have to remember I run a 39" tire on my daily driver dodge :)
