I know that road!

Mike/Christian,

It is nice to see that that road to the border with Nigeria still offers the odd challenge - and that the correct answer is still to wait for the dry season.

yes I believe they were under time contraints (visa) so they had to drive the Cameroon road even in the wet season. Sounds like fun to me....

When it Rains ...

it gets sloppy. We left Douala in late October of '74 and hit that section of road a week or so later. I did better than they did, I only got stuck a few times.

For those who wonder, the issues are:

-- Much of the road is in the mountains so there are no alternate routes. You can't go around the holes.

-- Most of the traffic is large trucks, so the ruts are huge.

Makes a bad combination, and it continues for 100km or so. The actual rain and mud are actually not as bad as some other places.

(Sadly, Beloved Spouse has astigmatism and this was in the days before autofocus. Still, the image brings back nightmares.)

Oh yeah, remember to "Tread Lightly!"

That was my favorite Overland Theater presentation as well! Amazing trip they had.
2arountheworld- I didn't realize that you were the one in the Syncro. Danica and I were the ones in the dark green 4runner next to Christians beautiful black Land Rover 110 pop up.

Tim!

I know we just briefly spoke the first day...too much going on.
I did admire your 4Runner though since I have a 2001 myself...

:)

Hey Christian, we wound up going through Death Valley and I think we just missed you at Eureka Dunes! Thanks for posting this picture I was trying to figure out how we would get a copy of it and the other group pic at happy hour.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Tim. Jim and Sheri's adventure was amazing, I have gone to their website and downloaded all the videos just to keep me motivated and scared during our trip planning and prep... I think everyone in ExPo should check it out Tale of Two Travelers

Luis and Lacey,
we just got a chance to talk briefly, but awesome truck! Speaking with you we realized there are other people like us who want to chuck it all, or should I say, go and GET it all by hitting the road!

Good luck with the trip planning, truck prep, and sleeping platform with keeping of the seats! Update us all often! :sombrero:

Get Motivated!

The road from Mamfe (or Bamenda) to the Nigerian border is rather nasty, but unless you go deep into the Amazon, southern Guyana, or a very few other places, you will not find anything similar in South America. There is too much commerce to let a road get that bad.

So, more of the "motivated" and less of the "scared." Press on!
