I found a mint 2001 Fuso 4x4 right down the road from my house.
they guy is a burning man diesel gear head. tons of cool vehicles.
he obviously knows how and does take care of them.
I am wondering about the asking price.
Only 20,000 miles on it. super clean. $25,000.
good price? room to negotiate? killer deal?
i am kind of excited.

welcome!

on first blush that price seems a bit steep, but condition and equipment is everything. Photos / deeper description would help us help you - it could be the deal of the century. ($25k would be more in line with what I would expect to pay for a 2005-2007.)

Price seems about 7-10k high to me. Check for rust as low mileage may be an indicator of snow plow duty which can destroy a vehicle in 20k miles.

this truck has not been used for work much at all. it has been in california for at least 7 years. No Snow in Cali! how ever it did spend its first couple years in Washington and Oregon. always owned by private party. has been used to tow a flatbed trailer a bit moving shipping containers. its like right off the lot. seats are barely worn. no dings no dents no rust. didn't see any leaks. the engine is immaculate. its got all new 10 play bfg off road tires with less than 1000 miles on them. it also has a 2.5 ton steel flatbed that has a 5th wheel hitch. on back there is a class 5 tow hitch. i have looked all around, its hard to find used 4x4 Fusos in california.

I may be mistaken, but i believe the cutoff GVW for having to retrofit DPFs (diesel particulate filter) in pre 2007 diesel trucks in Calif. is 14000 lb. I think a Fuso 4x4 has a GVW of 14050 lb, so this could be a problem, unless a camper is installed and it becomes an RV (exempt from DPF retrofit requirement).

Assuming it's a well taken care of FG - 20,000 miles is nothing...Clean used FGs with 20,000 miles? -well how many others do you have to choose from???? So the price could be very fair. The bigger question is you'll be paying a premium for the Fuso over domestic conventional medium duty 4x4s so why is the Fuso worth the premium to you? What do you want to do with it & what's your budget? Moe

2001 fuso

it has cali tags. but as a private vehicle. not commercial.

hello all

sounds like a good deal to me if it is in excellent condition. but dont let calif regs fool you, you will need to be commercial, get a motor carrier permit, stop at scales and pay the extra insurance if your driving it around as a flatbed. no exceptions.

i bought my 08 fg new and that is what i had to do, it is my private vehical. but since then i have register it as an rv, it was no problem getting this done. but no more driving it around with the camper off.

hope to see a few of you at the expo. had great fun running into another fuso camper in death valley a few weeks ago.

cheers lehel

As others have said, picking are slim on Fuso FGs (it seems especially on the west coast), so while that does seem high, what are your options?
20,000 is nothing for miles. My 2002 had under 50,000 when I bought it in 2010 and I think it was just broke in.
lehel1 is 100% correct. A flatbed in Calif, it is going to be commercial. Pricy registration and insurance. I would follow-up on that and the diesel pollute issue that is coming into effect this year (2014) in California.
What part of NorCal are you in (and don't say San Francisco, that is central California :sombrero: )

all flatbeds? i used to have a toyota tacoma 4x4 flatbed and never had to register it differently or stop at scales.

what if i add sides to the flatbed? will that make a difference? (no)
California:
Commercial- a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or combined gross vehicle weight (CGW) of 10,001 lbs. or more
Not Commerical - Light-weight trucks and vans, if the declared GVW or CGW is less then 10,001 lbs. or pickups with an unladen weight of 8,000 lbs. or less (even if the operating weight is over 10,000 lbs.)
-
The deal with your future Fuso is that if it is registered as an RV (motorhome) it will not be 'commercial' and will not have the California 'commercial fees' ($396 for the Fuso, see below) added to your registration and will be except from the 2014 diesel smog requirements.

To be a 'California Recreational Vehicles':
**A recreational vehicle is defined as any motorhome or housecar, travel trailer, truck camper, or camp trailer with or without motive power designed for human habitation or other occupancy.
They must contain less than 320 square feet of internal living room area (excluding built-in equipment and including, but not limited to wardrobe, closets, cabinets, kitchen units or fixtures, bath or toilet rooms) and 400 square feet or less of gross area measured at maximum horizontal projections. Recreational vehicles are built on a single chassis and are self-propelled, truck-mounted, or permanently towable on the highways without a permit.
**Motorhomes must contain permanently-installed independent life support systems which meet the criteria of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) and provide at least four of the following facilities:
cooking
refrigeration or ice box
self-contained toilet
heating and/or air conditioning
a portable water supply system including a faucet and sink, separate 110-125 volt electrical power supply
LP gas supply
-
The added breakdown on the commercial fees is:

A little more information on price.
Just an FYI that $25,000 is more then it sold for new, 0 miles, from the dealer in 2001
Most of the FGs sold seem to have been set-up as snowplows and or dump trucks, so that added equipment is factored into the price. It seems not a whole bunch of re-sale market for those items (plows, sanders, dump beds, etc) so if someone bought one of those and hoped to sell that equipment to recoup some of the purchase price, not too much $$ there. BUT if the buyer is looking for a snow plow, etc that equipment sure adds to the value.
In your searches, 2005 and later Fuso FG have the larger engine, so 75 lb-ft more torque and new style headlights.
You can look back through the threads on the Expo Forum here to get an idea of past asking prices.
