Extreme Outback Announces Intelligent Dual-Battery Manager

Extreme Outback Products now offers the IBS (Intelligent Battery System), a computerized dual-battery manager. Developed in Switzerland, the state-of-the-art system uses a RISC micro-computer to either isolate or link multiple batteries as needed. Normal operation separates the starting battery from the auxiliary one to safely power electrical accessories when the vehicle isn't running. An override button links the batteries for high-load uses such as winching and is also used for self jump-starting. In-cab monitoring, which uses an LED display to show each battery's state of charge (shown), is available. The system is offered in 12-volt and 24-volt models (controls four batteries). Installation involves an included power cable and a pre-made four-wire harness. The IBS won a Global Media Award as one of the best new products at the 2009 SEMA Show.

I spoke with George just yesterday about this system. It sounds great and George is a helluva guy to deal with.

I don't see it on their website.

Does anyone have any experience with the Black Rat recovery gear? Is it quality?

Can anyone with access to a unit report the dimensions of the monitor unit? (Trying to understand the potential for suface mounting in various locations)

How are things back home in STL?

Dimensions: 2.5" wide x 4" tall x 1" depth

Install on my 2001 Tacoma dash in place of the OEM clock.

Beautiful here in STL today, TangoBlue. Thx for the Tacoma pix showing the IBS display -- exactly what I'm up against on my Taco. It'd fit better in my truck at half that size!

Some one that has one. With the display key you toggle the LED's on and off correct? I do a lot of night driving and that whole monitor of LED's would be a annoyance lighting up the cab. So I've been curious as every picture of the device I've seen it has been lit up. I want to make sure before I buy that it wouldn't be putting up with glare daily.

Just curious. You know how many times you see "Developed in" whatever country and then "Made in China".

I wouldn't stress out too much about it. The web site says, "The IBS products are manufactured by the majority on fully automatic placement robots in Switzerland. This ultramodern manufacturing guarantees highest quality and a short manufacturing running time. We are able to handle larger orders at short notice because of our high stocking policy." The instruction manual also has prominently displayed "made in Switzerland" as well as the packaging.

Mine only displays the charge of the alternator, perhaps 3-4 green/yellow dots. To see the charge of the batteries you must hit the button...

Mine is placed low so I have to be actively looking at it in order to see it, though it is not bright at all.

Correct. That would be annoying but they only light when the red button is pressed and then for only a few seconds. The bottom voltage charge display and linked buttons stay lit while in operation but it isn't an issue.

After looking over the various options available, I installed an IBS dual battery system in my 5th generation 4Runner. I have the gauge in my glovebox so that it is out of the way but viewable when I want to look at it. I'm impressed thus far with it. I use an Optima yellow top as the 2nd battery. An ARB fridge is wired directly to it with an ARB wiring loom, and it seems to keep things cold consistently.

Cheers,
Greg
