We had such a great time ice fishing! We trailered snowmachines out to the Little Su and then snowmachined out to Figure Eight Lake.
We dressed up so warm yet I was sure afraid I would freeze. The excitement of riding the machines took over though and I had a ball. No one can hear ya hollerin' !!! :wings: We got there before sunrise. It was about -10 with a light breeze outta the east. It was a beautiful clear day. I had never been ice fishing so it was brand new. One of the guys brought a gas ice auger and in no time had tons of holes in a large circle. While he and my older son were doing that, another guy showed us how to set up a tipup. We baited it with chunks of fish and lowered it into the lake. We had to keep the 8 inch hole clear of ice with a dipper scooper thingy with holes in it...Sorry, I dont remember hearing what it was called....Then we would have to walk over to another hole and set another one. They were spread out quite a ways and my legs began to ache getting from one and back to another to check on them. It was good though because if you stop, man alive it got cold.... From across the way we could see a flag go up if a fish was on the hook so we would "run" across to check it out. (Sometimes we jumped on machines to check.) I pulled the first fish out. Pike dont really fight much and it was just interesting not like exciting... Hubby still took a picture though.
We had tried out a Eskimo ice fishing tent. It was great for keeping the wind off.
The tipups kept iceing up and we would have to clear the ice off so they would work. I lost one fish cause ice had formed and it cut the line as I tried to pull the fish up. It was heavier than the first one too. The guys had seen some pictures up on bulletin boards that got them all excited about getting a huge pike so I think they were a bit disappointed but still now I know how to ice fish!
