So to start this off. I have imported for myself an 89 Land Rover 110 and have dealt with customs on a lot of things on a business level, so I have an decent understanding of the do and don'ts of the import process and what is legal.
What I'm after, is importing a 2000 or 2001 Hilux Surf. So lets say there is N185 Toyota surf (LHD) with 5VZ or with engine removed. Basically this a Toyota 4Runner, so what is preventing me from bringing it under the “Substantially Similar” Clause? I understand the EPA wont allow the turbo diesel since it was never sold here and under 21 years old. BUT the rest of the vehicle is identical from what I understand, so it should be able to be imported, right?? The SURF and 4Runner are filed under the same Wikipedia page, that should be evidence enough, right?
Can you import a RHD under the “Substantially Similar” Clause?
At the end of the day I feel RHD will be the nail for this even though everything else is the same. Would love to have RHD diesel Surf
