Importing a 1994 Mercedes 814D 4x4 from Germany

Hello, I am thinking of Importing a 1994 Mercedes 814D 4x4 from Germany
Does anyone have any advice? It’s 25 years old so I should be able to bring it into the US. What about conforming with emissions and bumper regulations? It’s below 7.5 tons but above 10,000 lbs and registered as a truck in Germany right now. Might do the build out in Germany and get it registered as an RV there. Would that make it easier to import the 814D? Any advice on using a registered importer? I am planning on shippers it from Rotterdam to Halifax and then driving it to the SF Bay Area. Even if it will pass smog in California, you will not be able to register unless it has a US DOT sticker. I just gave up trying to register a 1983 Hymer motorhome with a Mercedes 2.3L gas engine. It has been registered in Wyoming since 2009.
