In Search Of....

It seems we spend our lives in search of..... The perfect girl (or guy)..... The perfect job..... The perfect vehicle..... The time to write about the perfect vehicle..... The time and patience to figure out how to enter anything in this website.

I have been fortunate. I do have the perfect girl! I am mostly retired now, but had some really good jobs. None were perfect, but they weren't bad either. The perfect vehicle? Well, you can be the judge of that now that I have a cold, it is cold and going to snow outside and I now have the time (maybe not the patience) to put some of the info about my search for the perfect off-road, highway capable, expedition vehicle I could "afford" to put together in this forum.

It started with an 06 TJ Unlimited Rubicon. I added a Full Traction 6" long arm lift, Superior Chrome Alloy axles, Tom Woods driveshaftsGarvin bumpers, Warn powerplant, Zenon fenders, 31.5 gallon GenRight gas tank, 35" BFG AT on ATX wheels and ended up with:

Pass Hoppers 9.12 012.JPG
I was a bit worried about the low pinion diffs so I added the AEV diff protectors and an oil pan protector as well:
Unlimited TJ 006.JPG

Now I needed some equipment to help with the expedition part of the plan, so I added a bed: (thanks to Mark and the Grey Mouser for the design)

Here is what it looks like all packed up from the rear: (This is packed for a 7 day trip through the Maze District, Beef Basin and back up Lockhart Basin last May)

I mounted an IPad using a mount from TOOKOOL in order to be able to easily track our progress (or lack of):

All in all, it was meeting my needs, very capable off road, comfortable exploration vehicle and, for the most part, good on the highway. But, going up hills, or even against the wind, was a bit of a stretch for the 4 liter. An going over Eisenhower and Vail Passes it was a 4300 RPM 53 mph slug. Even with the 4:88 gears (it is an automatic and it weights almost 5,000 lbs) it just was painful. So, my perfect wife and I thought about buying a truck and a trailer. Then thought we might as well get a camper for the truck. Then we added all this up and choked. I said, "You know, it would be a whole lot cheaper to just put a V8 in the Jeep". And that is how that was sold.

I am a GM fan so went with Novak Conversions, they found me a 6.0 liter LQ4 and a 4L60-E transmission with 10 miles on it. They include everything needed to drop it in, including wiring and adapters to be able all the gauges and equipment. And I ended up with this:
TJ 6.0 Vortec 003.JPG

I needed some gauges to monitor oil and transmission temperatures:

And a new cover for the shifter. I also wanted to be able to more easily tell what gear I was in so found a gear position indicator from Dakota Digital and put it above the console. You can see it indicating O for overdrive:
TJ shift and position light 002.JPG

So for so good. It goes 75 mph down the interstate very comfortably with no problems with hills or head wind. It goes over Eisenhower and Vail Passes with the cruise control set at 65 and it only locks up in overdrive on the steepest of hills. On a trip to Moab it seemed to get the same or slightly better gas mileage.

So, is it perfect? Right now it is (at least for me), but I am sure (as my wife will tell you) I will find something else that it will have to have. I will let you know.

Hope this was worth the read.

What radiator hoses did you use for your swap? I have a 5.3 from novak and can't find hoses I like. Yours look like they fit a lot tighter.

Also, do you have pics of your shifter attached at the transmission?

Thanks!

Nice rig, I have an 05 LJ Rubicon in the same color.
Any more details on the bed? I've been trying to figure out a way to sleep in the Jeep and haven't been able to figure out how to do so comfortably.

I was not happy with the hoses that came with the conversion. I went to NAPA and searched through pictures and came up with the hoses I am using. They work fine. I will see if I can find the numbers when I have a moment to go through my files.

I do not have pictures of the attachment, but I am using the stock shifter. We renotched the shifter plate for four forward gears rather than the three that were stock. Eric at Novak was somewhat skeptical but it works very well.

That is a really nice build. As good as the reputation of the old straight six 4.0 Jeep motor was I always thought part of that being due to not having any other options. I have an LQ4 in my Yukon Denali runabout and its been clockwork and moves the 5500lb truck with ease.

The Perfect Jeep just got better, nice rig...............

The 4.0L in a heavy LJ is really brought to it's knees on the big Hills, I have made the 2nd gear climb to the Eisenhower tunnel. On the flat open Interstate the wind can bring the little 4.0L down to 10 MPG. If you are Easy on the 6.0L, you will match or beat the old MPG and if you are not easy on the skinny pedal, we 4.0L owners hope you do get poor MPG's when having the kind of fun we can't, sand comes to mind.:)......

I too would face my GM V8 bias vs Jeep's Hemi V8 bias, I am glad you showed us another option.............

Thanks for the kind words regarding my LJ. Prior to the LJ I had a 95 ZJ that was built for the same type of use. I could sleep in it for a week and climb ledges like crazy. I got to appreciate the 105" wheelbase, but not so much the unibody. After 150,000 miles (many of them hard miles) the unibody was showing issues. The LJ seemed like the perfect replacement.

The 6.0 liter is really working out well. Climbed some sand dunes while in Moab just before Thanksgiving and the Vortec roared. One thing I really like about the 4L60-E is it can be put in 2nd and it stays there. With the 4 to 1 T-case many times 2nd gear is all you need. With the Jeep tranny it would shift down to first sometimes at the most inopportune times.

Found the NAPA part numbers. The part of the hose attached to the radiator is NBH 7796 and the hose attached to the motor is NA 8704.
