Inner hub seal orientation

I'm in the middle of replacing the wheel bearings on my D1. The new oil seal has printed on one side "This way to stub axle." Should that face to the inboard or outboard side? Seems like that means inboard but the old seals face the other way so I want to be sure before I reassemble. Thanks

The open part of the seal should always face the oil or grease (the liquid being sealed. For the hub seal the open part is to the hub, facing the bearing.

Ok, so here are two shots of the seal. Is picture #1 or #2 the "open" side?

LOL inboard outboard is a funny way to think of it.

inboard on the truck or inboard on the hub :D

I think you best describing it with the picture 1 twards the bearing comment.

Thanks guys. I was 99% sure I had it right but when the hub came off and the old seal was the other way around, I thought I'd better check.

Yes, #1 to the bearing.

If you look in your workshop manual....the is a section called "General Fitting Instructions". In that section it covers things like how seals are fitted.

Another tip is to forget the crappy Discovery seals and use the defender double lip RTC3511. They offver much better protection.

They go in like this, recessed 4mm.

here is a tip for you

the old bearing race is the best tool for pressing the new seals

Nah, my hub nut socket is better. I tried using an old race once and it was a pain for me. I looked down at the tools I was using for the job and saw the hub nut socket and thought, damn that looks perfect. It is.

The best price I have found on those RTC3511 are British Pacific.

I've paid upwards of $20 for the genuine ones and the britpart ones are pretty expensive too.

yeah well if everyone had a sweet 52mm like the ones your brother gave us for christmas a few years back I would agree. :D

But most people are just not that lucky!

Hold up! Let's get the facts straight here. :)

I scoured the internet back in the day to find a 52mm 1/2" socket and found that Sealey socket from the UK. Of course once my brother saw it, he had to have one and I think he bought a bunch for the rest of the crew.
