Instead of Rear Tire Carrier

I have a 80-series Land Cruiser, but this should apply elsewhere.

Since I don't feel I need the added departure angle moving the spare would provide, I think I want a new rear bumper that will provide protection and, instead of carrying my spare, lots of extra storage. Primarily, I need to carry three fuel cans, two water cans, 10lb propane and maybe even some extra cruft.

Anyone else doing this? Any photos, comments, vendors?

Thanks,

A.

2 things (my 2 cents I guess)

-I've seen a discussion regarding this years ago on a rock crawling board. Those that don't carry a spare do carry extra tire repair supplies and tools.
-Some organized events require a full size spare.

There was someone (SOAZ I think?) who was running a 3rd gen 4runner with the exact arrangement you're talking about. He had his spare in the stock location and a custom bumper with 3 fuel cans and a pretty cool fold-down table for tailgating.

Not talking about ditching my spare, just leaving it in stock location under the rig.

That's interesting. I wonder how much grief the amount of space required to swing that out would cause, though.

I think I'd rather have trays that can take three cans each, one per side. (The cans would be oriented the other way.) Then I could strap a five or ten pound propane cylinder somewhere. Also thinking about a lockable box, but that gets expensive pretty quick.

Tim and Kelsey get lost..
While in use on trips etc it was no hassle at all. It freely swung open to the first setting (just far enough for the rear hatch to open) and then the McMastercarr spring pin would lock it in place. To open it to a full 180 you just had to give the pin a pull.
Trying to load groceries with 1 hand at Costco in a tight parking lot, it occasionally bugged me. If I knew I wasn't going offroading for a month, which wasn't too often, I'd just pull the swingout off and leave it in the garage. I miss that setup... Had it for many many years.
One thing I don't understand is why every rear swingout bumper doesn't come with some sort of table setup. It costs almost nothing and took about a half hour to add on.

How about making a tubular rear bumper that is also a water reservoir, attach swing out gas can rack to one side and spare tire to the other?
