intake for offroad?

wondering the benefits of running an open element intake on a jeep, ie my old car was a vw gti i had a cold air intake. i didnt drive off road in mud or water, i know there is no snorkel available for my car "2012 grand cherokee", id have it if it was available. but i know intake nice to have, is anyone running open "cold air " intake on an exp vehicle? are you worried about water mud? Has anyone used just a drop in filter with swiss cheese box? please share your experiences. thanks in advance.

I know you said you don't plan on going in water but I'll still post a reason why not to use an open filter. I had a K&N FIPK open filter and am still fixing gremlins in this jeep. Wanna buy it? Honestly open filters don't belong anywhere on a vehicle that might ever see wet conditions and I don't think I'll ever make that mistake again.

Somebody is bound to mention the fact that carefull research shows that filters like the K&N do a very poor job of filtering out dust and dirt and this gets in and greatly accelerates engine wear.........so I may as well start.

I put a K&N in my TJ just so I could reuse it, but it didn't make a bit of difference, and I am iffy on how good a job it does cleaning dust out. Luckily, I don't do dust often, since I'm in an open jeep. I had an open element filter in my Sonoma, and all it did was oil up the MAF sensor so I had to clean it once in a while, and add induction noise when I booted it. Want louder, go open element. Want fuel economy, power, performance, or some other thing that's claimed, you're wasting your money.

My suggestion: Spend that money on tow hooks and/or a hitch, or save up for some decent tires. They'll all serve you much better than an intake.

Oversized K&N filters spread the volume of air out to the point the velocity is low. This low velocity and extra oil added to the filter are ideal for the extreme dust we have in the desert. If you use a small or stock size filter without the extra oil then your on your own as far as it sucking the oil covered dirt onto mass air flow sensors and into the engine. They are still the worlds best filters when sized correctly and is why all others compare themselfs to K&N.

I have an AFE Pro 7 Filter in my Jeep JK with stock air box. It has more surface area to pull from than the stock filter, and is oiled. Very heavy duty, definitely recommend. I am hoping it will still fit with a snorkel down the road, such as the new Rugged Ridge one. I wouldn't blame an aftermarket filter on seizing an engine from deep water crossings. I am sure stock filters offer no more protection from water than aftermarket ones.
