Intel changes its processor names -- again

Just when consumers were getting used to the Core 2 Duo nomenclature,
Intel has decided to re-name its processor groups. Coming soon, Intel
will use these names:

Atom = low power netbooks, smart phones and embedded processors

Celeron = inexpensive low performance single core

Pentium = inexpensive low performance dual core

Core i3 = multi-core with good performance

Core i5 = multi-core with better performance

Core i7 = multi-core with top performance

Sigh...

the whole 3 5 and 7 chip names has been long discussed. BMW tried to sue them over it. It is actually to make things simpler, and i think it will. Everybody knows that the 755 is nicer than the 555 BMW as an example.

Just to put it in perspective i first heard about this name change back in 05-06

This is nothing terribly new, it's been in the works for a while. They've been working on it for at least a year that I know. They are still using the name 'Core', just modifying it to include i3, i5, i7 rather than Duo or Quad. The name Centrino will be now used exclusively on WiFi and WiMax chipsets next year.
