International Scout...Turbo Diesel?

They are pretty doggy, especially in that heavy vehicle. And the aftermarket does not offer much for them. Still, it is a diesel and kind of unique.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Sounds like the guy would probably let it go for about $4K...

my dad bought one brand new in the last year they were made '81? seems to come to mind. the motor will go forever but not very powerful. you could get a bigger turbo for it and turn up the boost would help ALOT!

the main problem was the international body and components were crap! After only 2 years it started to rust and the door hinges wore out and interior stuff started falling off.

yeah, I think instead filling the void in my life with something sub-par, I'm just going to wait for my dream Cruiser to cross my path. Thanks for the input!!

I beg to differ but that Scout could be a gem. With a possible t-19 wide ratio transmission (that’s a 6:1 transmission!), Dana 44 axles front and rear with possible limited slip, coveted dana 300 transfer case. The truck is highly sought after in my mind. Not only can it wheel in stock form but every thing was built to last. There's not a chain driven device on that cornbinder. Though the Nissan motor is an old school design, they tend to run FOREVER. And the aftermarket world still supports that truck as there are tons of places to get parts. Check out www.binderbulletin.org
I've wheeled my Scout all over the place, including the Rubicon and Moab and it’s almost bone stock with just a lift. But, I am biased.

Long-time IH owner here...though I don't have a Scout now, I've owned 3 of them over the years. I've got just a little experience with them!

The Scout is a superb offroad vehicle, and very difficult to beat even today. Tremendous entrance and exit angles, extremely maneuverable with a surprisingly small turning circle, and built like a tank. Find a rust-free example (they are out there), and you could do a LOT worse.

The Nissan engine definitely is no powerhouse, but it is enough to get the job done. The engine is, I believe, still being used in forklifts - it's actually a very long-lived design. As of just a few years ago, you could still buy "crate engines" from Nissan.

If it's in good shape, I'd grab it.

The motor is the Nissan SD33-T I belive...

Scouts are built very robustly, BUT, and this is big but. Weight is never a good thing for durability of drivetrain parts. Sammy's do so damn well cause they are light. Put Diesel torque trying to move a REALLY HEAVY truck (scouts might just be the heaviest compact 4x4's EVER) with big tires, adn you're looking at lots of drivetrain breakage. IH made some neat old Crew trucks for logging companies as well wich I always thought were neat, but I've never been a fan of the Scout or Travel-all. They look like blubery Old bronco's to me.

I have two turbo diesel scouts (one is a traveler, the longer wheelbase model) and I love them. I am actually right in the middle of getting the traveler on the road and am building it up to do some trips.

The sd33t is an extremely reliable engine. In stock form its not much for power, but with a few modifications it does a TON better. Not only that they get good mileage (25ish on the highway depending on gearing) and are built like a tank. Everything on the truck was built with heavy duty truck parts and I think that is what sets Scouts apart from other suv's from the same era, and even newer ones.

The nice thing about the turbo diesels (they only came in scouts in 1980, which is the last year scouts were made btw) is that they all had the t-19 transmission and dana 300 transfer case, as well as dana 44 axles.

My traveler also has a 33 gallon fuel tank which will be nice for long trips. Also, there has been a lot of weight reduction, which will help. I will have to make a thread of my build up for you guys that are interested.

I suppose I reiterated some of the things that had been stated previously in the thread, but to anyone who is looking to find a turbo diesel scout, if you find one that isnt rusted to all heck (very common, us scout guys get used to it :p ) you wont be dissappointed.

There are many Scout fans on here, including myself, who would love to see a thread on your build-up. :jumping:

I will do that for sure...actually since I bought the traveler (1 1/2 years ago) it has just sat in my shop. Ive only been working on it for the past week and already the new floors are almost in, the fenders have been trimmed and the brake system has been completely re-done. I will make a build thread here after I get some pics.
