Hello everyone. I have finally decided to introduce myself take part in what seems to be a very interesting forum. My name is Jason and my wife Kellie and I are proud owners of "Higgins", a 1980 Series III Dormobile (one of us is more proud than the other mind you). We are currently living in England but it looks like we will be returning home to Canada in the near future with Higgins in tow.

Now those of you who are familiar with Dormobile will know that Martin Walter did not build Dormies past the mid seventies but Higgins was lucky enough to find an new way of life from "John" a rotting (but mostly complete) original Dormobile. (We were even able to recover the curtains!) Both trucks had V8 conversions but with the price of fuel and an episode of sputtering after driving the petrol engine through a modest puddle on the highway the decision was made to swap in a 200tdi. ACH Land Rovers in Lowestoft did a great job of swapping the Discovery engine in and during our inaugural journey through Western Europe and Morocco we had no major issues and averaged about 27 mpg (imperial) throughout the trip which I found astounding considering the type of driving we were doing. Tim at Dormobile helped us get the pop-top and interior bits in order before the journey began. There was so much to do that we departed England with boxes of parts in the back but a few hours here and there and we regained our living space as pieces were installed in their proper place. At this point there is still a laundry list of things to do but not a bad rig overall. I have a few questions for the Series veterans on this forum but I will save them for a dedicated post. I have attached a few pictures if anyone is interested.

Cheers,
Jason

And that Higgins fellow is just a super nice vehicle!
It's a beautiful Dormie. I have Dormie-envy, that's certain.
Drop by if you are ever in our neck of the woods!

No offence take Dave. When I first began to search for a Dormobile here in the UK, there were only two that I could come up with. Both examples had very low mileage, were very original and both were very expensive. Years ago I decided to restore my Scout II. It became one of those project that went on and on and has never quite finished. It is now to the point where has become too pretty to off-road without feeling guilty. I now realise that though it looks cool it does not meet my needs. I learned that lesson the hard way so with Higgins it was function over form. Clean but ugly is the way to go.

A couple of the Scout in progress.

Welcome!

I love the Scout too - really nice job! Isn't there a world of difference between a Land Rover and the Scout?? The Scout looks vast and comfortable inside, as if they built it with the occupants in mind! Weird concept... :)

Good lord that is one sano restoration of the Scout, looks very well done and absolutely beautiful to see an old truck restored to like new condition. I know what you mean form over function, I seem to gravitate to well built and functional over the hot new thing, that's why I love old trucks, they were never trying to be cars and have more in common with a tractor than a modern passenger car. I love old vehicles period. My Toyota may not be that old, but it's built along those philisophical line so it makes me happy every time I look at itand espescialy when I drive it.

So anywho, welcome to the Expo and I love the Dormobile! It is, to me and I'm sure alot of others here, a thing of functional beauty.

Cheers

Dave
