IPad NAV with XM Weather?? (replacing Garmin 478 with iPad?)

Hey, Guys:
I currently run a Garmin 478 GPSMAP with XM Nexrad Radar.
I have read several of the threads on here and especially found the Ipad and InReach helpful, but I want to know if there is an app available that will
function just like the 478 to allow NAV with Nexrad overlay without the subscription of InReach (which seems a little more than what I need).

I am not a pilot but I have become spoiled to the features of this unit which also allow waterway navigation as well.

If anyone has found something that would allow me to replace the 478 with my iPad (3rd Gen- no G4 chip but to a tether off of my iPhone 4S with G4)

A few apps are starting to incorporate NEXRAD. Look at the app Grid here http://tlcfaq.com/main/2012/08/ipad-overland-navigation-system/

The only issue is that the NEXRAD data on the apps needs a data connection - if you're in Podunk with out internet service you wont see the weather data.

BTW the subscriptions for XMWX are up there - $30 mo if you want NEXRAD.

I already have the subscription. Truthfully, if I could determine a way to just use the iPad as a host screen and tuck the Garmin away in the glove box or under the dash, I'd be ok with that as well.
I am just tired of the itty bitty screen. Got no beef with the Garmin!
The unit itself is a tremendous item of technology, but the lack of touch screen, the laborious manner in which you enter routes, etc. are just making it ... or me ... tired.
